In April 2025, 51�Թ�� Business School introduced a new brand identity that reflects both its unique position within 51�Թ�� London and its growing impact across disciplines, industries, and society.

51�Թ��’s journey in business education began nearly 70 years ago with the launch of its first postgraduate programme – an MSc in Production Engineering & Management. Since then, a series of milestones have laid the foundation of what is now 51�Թ�� Business School. These include the establishment of the Management School, the conferral of faculty status (becoming the Business School), the launch of the Global Online MBA, and most recently, the introduction of the School's first full undergraduate programme.

At the heart of the rebrand is a powerful new strapline – “where science means business” – signalling a renewed commitment to bridging the gap between cutting-edge scientific discovery and real-world commercial and societal solutions. As our community continues to grow and evolve within this new framework, we offer a closer look at the creative strategy behind the rebrand and its long-term significance for 51�Թ�� Business School.

Aligning with 51�Թ��’s vision

The rebrand reflects our key role in 51�Թ��’s Science for Humanity strategy, ensuring business thinking is embedded in the translation of science into practical impact. We act as a two-way bridge for transdisciplinary research and partnerships across the university, echoing the same mission 51�Թ�� has had since its founding: "To be useful."

A renewed visual experience

The rebrand is more than a logo refresh – it’s a comprehensive new visual and verbal identity. Our new name, now simply 51�Թ�� Business School, along with our logo is the culmination of our ethos as a modern, open, and forward-thinking institution. It serves as a symbol of our commitment to business and social transformation to positively impact society. The strapline for our brand - “where science means business” - highlights our interdisciplinary spirit. This visual language is being implemented across social media, printed materials, signage and other communications, reinforcing the extension of our values.

The design partnership

We partnered with Pentagram — one of the world’s leading design studios and the creative force behind 51�Թ��’s university-wide brand strategy — to develop a new identity that resonates with the distinct character and vision of 51�Թ�� Business School. Through an extensive consultation process involving faculty, students, alumni and professional staff, Pentagram translated our bold academic vision that reflects our interdisciplinary strengths, entrepreneurial mindset and global ambition.

Created in collaboration with the video production agency h10, our short brand film shows how the new identity was brought to life. The video captures the visual transformation of the logo, depicting the journey from the brand’s inception in scientific intellect to its convergence with business acumen.

Pathway to collaboration

The rebrand is about more than appearance – it’s grounded in how we collaborate across 51�Թ�� and beyond. Deeply embedded in 51�Թ��’s research ecosystem we continue to be a hub for academics, policymakers and entrepreneurs. From the Institute for Deep Tech Entrepreneurship to the Centre for Sectoral Economic Performance, the Business School strives to translate knowledge into innovation. The School continues to adapt to and solve complex real-world challenges in public health, emerging markets and climate change.

What’s next?

The new identity is already being rolled out across digital and physical platforms and will continue to be updated throughout the year. At 51�Թ�� Business School, we continue to pride ourselves for not just being a part of a world-leading university, but a world-changing one. This rebrand provides a clearer, bolder expression of who we are – and the impact we aim to have.

What does generosity look like in global finance? This question framed the conversation between Dame Julia Hoggett, CEO of the London Stock Exchange and Peter Todd, Dean of 51�Թ�� Business School, at this year’s Joan Woodward Memorial Lecture.

As part of this year’s theme “Give to Gain”, the event, which marked International Women’s Day, focused on how generosity in leadership, mentorship and opportunity can shape stronger institutions and more inclusive markets.

The event honoured Joan Woodward, one of 51�Թ��’s earliest female professors and a pioneering scholar, whose research showed that organisational structures must adapt to their social and technological context.

A sociologist in finance

Opening the discussion, the Dean noted that Woodward’s insight on organisations being fundamentally social systems remains highly relevant today.

“Joan Woodward brought a sociologist’s eye to questions of power, structure and technology – and demonstrated that management is, above all, a social practice.” he said. “It was therefore especially fitting that our speaker this year should be Dame Julia, someone who has carried that social and political science perspective into the heart of global finance. It was a great pleasure to have her with us.”

That perspective has shaped Hoggett’s own career. In 2024, she was awarded a Damehood for services to business and finance, recognising both her industry leadership and her work championing more inclusive workplaces.

“Markets are really sociology with money,” she told the audience. “They’re about how large groups of people think, behave and organise themselves.”

Trust and access to capital

Exchanges, Hoggett argued, act as essential conveners in the global financial system.

“Stock exchanges bring together those who have capital with those who need it,” she said. “Trust has been at the heart of every transaction in this city for 300 years, and it still is. Maintaining it requires institutions that prioritise trustworthiness.”

“What the world needs is not more trust,” Hoggett said, echoing philosopher Onora O'Neill. “The world needs more trustworthiness.”

That principle has also shaped her views on access to capital: “One of the reasons I care so passionately about public markets is that they are inherently democratising.” she said.

By contrast, she suggested that private markets can concentrate opportunity among already wealthy investors. Supporting companies as they move from private to public funding, she said, helps broaden wealth creation across the economy.

Leadership through generosity

For early-career professionals in the audience, Hoggett emphasised that leadership is about generosity – giving time, mentorship and opportunity to others.

Her advice: “You can lead from any seat in an organisation. Leadership starts when you understand your role in the wider system and take full ownership of it. Master your brief, understand the context and seek to shape outcomes, and you can do far more than you think.”

That spirit reflects the legacy of Woodward herself: a scholar whose work reshaped how organisations are understood and whose influence continues to inspire new generations of leaders to rethink how markets truly work.

Professor Peter Todd, renowned expert in organisation, management and information technology, begins his role as Dean of 51�Թ�� Business School.

51�Թ�� Business School is delighted to announce that Professor Peter Todd has officially commenced his role as the new Dean, effective today (2 September 2024). Professor Todd brings a wealth of experience and a distinguished academic career to the Business School, promising to lead it into an exciting new chapter of growth and innovation.

With a background in information technology and innovation management, Professor Todd has held several senior academic roles across Europe and North America. He previously served as Dean of the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University in Canada and most recently as the Director General (CEO) and Dean of HEC Paris.

His extensive expertise in information technology and management, and experience in university fundraising will be invaluable as he takes on this leadership role at 51�Թ�� Business School.

Education and research for business and society

Commenting at the time of his appointment, Professor Todd said: “I am thrilled to be joining 51�Թ�� Business School. 51�Թ�� is an exceptional global institution with an unsurpassed reputation for research excellence and a unique entrepreneurial spirit.

"I am particularly drawn to the determination of the university and its business school to tackle big questions that foster a healthy, smart, sustainable and resilient society through innovative and entrepreneurial approaches that bridge business with science, engineering and medicine."

Professor Todd has held several senior academic roles across Europe and North America

He continued: “The big questions for business are the big questions facing society. Climate and sustainability, health and wellness, AI and autonomous technology, income inequality, diversity and inclusion, and building resilient societies. In this regard, business research and teaching need to bring a broader lens. The answers to these questions will only be found by working across boundaries, bringing together experts in business, with science, engineering and medicine. 51�Թ�� and its business school are uniquely positioned to tackle such issues in 2024 and beyond.”

Professor Ian Walmsley, Provost of 51�Թ��, said of Professor Todd's appointment: “Peter brings a wealth of experience of leading globally oriented, internationally prominent business schools in Europe and North America. He is the ideal person to lead 51�Թ�� Business School into its next era.

Professor Todd succeeds Professor Franklin Allen, who took up the role of Interim Dean of the Business School in September 2023, following the departure of Professor Francisco Veloso.

"Challenge and opportunity”

Professor Todd first moved to Europe in 2015 for his role heading up HEC Paris. In a recent video interview with the Business School, he said “challenge and opportunity” were what tempted him to this side of the Atlantic: “The challenge of figuring out how to work in a different culture, working with different languages, working with different people, and the opportunity to embrace the culture, richness and diversity of Europe.”

The importance he places on diversity extends to the role of EDI in education: “Every time we get more diverse, we get better... If you want to discover, if you want to invent new things, if you want to find new things, you need different perspectives and different approaches.

"I am particularly drawn to the determination of the university and its business school to tackle big questions"

“Diversity makes us stronger. And if diversity is going to work, people have to feel like they belong.”

As the first member of his family to experience higher education, Professor Todd worked in a cement plant in British Columbia to pay his way through university. He received his undergraduate degree from McGill University, returning 20 years after graduating to be Dean of its business school.

In his spare time, Professor Todd enjoys reading, salmon fishing – as an “excuse to be out in nature” – and following US politics.

Yodhita Maureen Romindo (MSc Finance) received the award for the Power of Innovative Thinking for her work organising the largest Indonesian cultural festival in the UK, as well her mentorship of female students and her leadership of an 51�Թ�� Consulting Group project.

51�Թ�� Business School Dean Francisco Veloso has been appointed to the AACSB's board of directors

In its latest round of board elections, the AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), has appointed Dean Veloso as AACSB Official Representative of an Organization from Europe, the Middle East & Africa.

AACSB’s mission is “to foster engagement, accelerate innovation, and amplify impact in business education worldwide.”

Dean Veloso will take office on 1 July and serve a three-year term alongside Dean Delphine Manceau of NEOMA Business School in France, who was elected to an equivalent role.

“I am delighted to be appointed to AACSB’s board of directors and would like to thank the Nominating Committee and all the members that voted in this election for their support. I look forward to playing a key role in advancing quality business education and supporting global leaders in line with the organisation’s focus on vision, values and strategic leadership,” said Dean Veloso.

In 2022, Dean Veloso, an internationally renowned authority in entrepreneurship and innovation, was reappointed Dean of 51�Թ�� Business School for a second five-year term. He joined 51�Թ�� in 2017, having previously served as Dean of the Católica Lisbon School of Business & Economics in Portugal.

I look forward to playing a key role in advancing quality business education

During his time as Dean of 51�Թ�� Business School, he has led the development of an ambitious 10-year strategy to bolster its position as a prominent global business school, recognised for research and education that contributes to the challenges facing today’s tech-driven businesses and society.

Key strategic priorities include sustainability and social responsibility, entrepreneurship, digital transformation, health innovation and future finance. A variety of research centres have been set up or bolstered to support these priorities and several international awards have recognised the impact of the School’s work.

The Business School has also been a key enabler of important cross-College initiatives, including the new Institute for Deep Tech Entrepreneurship, the I-X initiative and the development of 51�Թ��’s White City Campus.

Professor Francisco Veloso offers his take on the future of higher education and tells us why it isn’t enough to simply preach about the modernisation of business

Throughout his career, Professor Francisco Veloso, Dean of 51�Թ�� Business School since 2017, has wanted to answer one question: what is the best way to create economic and social impact from the science and technology that's generated in universities? So, it’s no surprise he found a home at 51�Թ��.

“Being at 51�Թ��, where science and business are so perfectly aligned, was no accident,” he says. “I don't think there is any other institution that is as well-equipped to be working at the intersection of business, society and technology.”

Initially studying natural sciences, specifically applied physics, Dean Veloso quickly discovered a passion for innovation and completed a PhD at MIT in Technology Management & Policy. This gave him the opportunity to pursue the study of innovation and connect it to entrepreneurship.

“I very much enjoyed doing research, and it was my interest in finding answers to policy and managerial questions related to innovation and entrepreneurship, that led me to academia.”

Intellectual leadership

Translating academia into impact was a priority for Dean Veloso when he took up the role, and it became one of the defining features of his first term leading the Business School.

This focus was reflected in the results of the Research Excellence Framework 2021, in which the School was named as a leading business school for research, placing second among all the management and business schools in the UK, and first for research environment.

“One of the most significant achievements over the last few years is the evolution we've had in our academic capabilities by increasing the size of our faculty and, with it, our ability to generate high-quality and high-impact research.”

We, at the Business School, also need to be transforming and creating a diverse and inclusive environment

Reappointed for a second term as Dean in 2022, he plans to continue growing the Business School’s reputation as an international force for intellectual leadership, looking at the important societal problems the School can tackle together with 51�Թ�� over the next five years.

The fruits of this labour can be seen, he says, in cross-College projects in which the School is a leading player, including I-X, which provides a collaborative environment for research, education and entrepreneurship across artificial intelligence, data science and digital technologies.

Meanwhile, the work of the new Institute for Deep Tech Entrepreneurship aims to tackle some of the world’s major challenges, such as climate change and developing sustainable food and water systems, using technology that exists in universities around the world. Some of these issues are already being addressed by the Business School’s other major research centres, including the Centre for Health Economics & Policy Innovation and the Centre for Climate Finance & Investment.

“The groundwork for these projects has been built over the last few years, but it's really coming to fruition now.”

The future of higher education

Under Dean Veloso’s leadership and guided by his expertise in innovation, the Business School has developed a culture where experimentation is encouraged. This appetite for trying out new ideas has resulted in successful tech spinouts from the School’s Edtech Lab, including online courseware publisher Epigeum and online education company Insendi.

Technology will continue to play a crucial role in the educational advances Dean Veloso is introducing to the School, particularly when it comes to the impact of a hybrid world on the learning environment. Part of this, he says, involves continuing to develop the social side of learning and offering a meaningful digital community.

“We're social beings. We like to be together, laugh together, drink together, tell jokes together, cry together, learn together... This is much harder to do digitally. So, how do you do continue to do that – and combine the digital with the physical learning side of things?”

Another key focus for Dean Veloso is transitioning to an increasingly inclusive and diverse environment. One way he has started to address this crucial issue is with key initiatives, such as the School’s Diversity Committee, as well as the launch of a Student EDI Strategy and award-winning Working in Diverse Organisations course.

Being at 51�Թ��, where science and business are so perfectly aligned, was no accident

The goal is to ensure staff and students can benefit from working and studying in a more diverse-aware organisation.

"This is the beginning of a journey, and I am aware that there is still plenty for us to learn and implement. I also fully recognise that a diverse, engaged and supportive research and teaching environment is central to our ability to truly benefit business and improve society," he says.

“Business schools, certainly ours, will be crucial in helping the wider business world move into the future, a more sustainable one, and a more diverse one. When it comes to equality, diversity and inclusion, it’s not enough to engage with business and society on their transformations. We, at the Business School, also need to be transforming and creating a diverse and inclusive environment.”

These efforts, he says, will also be valued and recognised by the broader community, especially younger, socially aware students.

"They will want the university to reflect their values and views. We cannot be a beacon for the students – and prepare them to be agents of change in broader society – if they don't see change happening in their own university.

“We need to show that we’re preparing for the future now."
