7th Meeting of the Special Interest Group

The meeting will welcome contributions spanning the full spectrum of wave research, from fundamental physics to applied coastal and offshore engineering.

We invite presentations addressing observational, theoretical, numerical, and experimental studies of waves across scales, including windwave generation, nonlinear wave dynamics, wavecurrent interaction, wave breaking and turbulence, spectral wave modelling, remote sensing of waves, and the role of waves in coastal and ocean processes. Contributions that link wave dynamics with coastal hazards, offshore infrastructure, climate variability, and airsea interaction are particularly encouraged. The aim is to foster discussion across disciplines and communities working on ocean waves, promoting exchange between researchers using field observations, laboratory experiments, numerical modelling, and emerging data-driven approaches.

Interactive Laboratory Session
As part of the workshop programme, participants will have the opportunity to visit and actively engage in experiments at the Hydrodynamics Laboratory at 51勛圖厙.

This interactive session will include demonstrations and hands-on discussion around several ongoing experimental facilities: short-crested wave generation in the Deep Water Basin, wave transformation over coastal bathymetry in the Coastal Flume, and windwave interaction experiments in the Double-Ended WindWave Flume.

Attendees will be able to observe experiments in operation, discuss measurement techniques and scaling issues, and exchange ideas on how laboratory studies can inform field observations and numerical modelling of ocean waves.

Synthetic Cells as an Alternative Paradigm for Biological Engineering

Synthetic biology is poised to be one of the defining technologies of our time with the potential to transform how we treat disease, monitor our environments, and manufacture chemicals. Over recent decades, remarkable progress has been made in re-engineering living cells to give them new functions. However, engineering living systems differs fundamentally from the design of traditional engineered systems, such as software, electronics, or mechanical devices. Biology is impossibly complex, adaptive, and often unpredictable, making it a uniquely challenging medium for engineering. As we push toward more ambitious applications, these challenges are becoming increasingly apparent.

In this talk, I will describe our efforts to address these limitations by developing a new approach to engineering biology. Rather than modifying existing living cells, we seek to construct encapsulated chemical microsystemssynthetic cellsfrom first principles, starting from molecular building blocks. We aim to programme these synthetic cells with behaviours typically associated with living systems, such as communication, signalling, bioproduction, motility and stimulusresponse. I will also discuss our microfluidic technologies for the scalable manufacture of synthetic cells and related lipid-based drug delivery systems.

This talk explores how the Neural Tangent Kernel (NTK) can be used as a practical lens for understanding data influence, noise, and uncertainty in modern neural networks. Rather than focusing only on predictive accuracy, we study how individual training examples affect predictions, how models behave under noisy observations, and how to quantify when predictions should be trusted. Building on the well-established NTK connection between neural networks, kernel methods, and Gaussian processes, we present three results: an information theoretic approach to data attribution, a characterization of how regularization corresponds to observation noise in wide networks, and an efficient method for uncertainty estimation that captures more structure than standard last layer approaches while remaining computationally practical. Together, these results show how the NTK perspective can provide simple and interpretable tools for reasoning about model behaviour beyond accuracy.

Bio:

Kamil Ciosek is a researcher working on the theory and practice of machine learning, with interests spanning Neural Tangent Kernels, Gaussian process perspectives on neural networks, Bayesian uncertainty estimation in deep learning, and calibration. His recent work studies the connections between wide neural networks and Gaussian processes, including the role of NTK features in Bayesian inference and uncertainty quantification. Separately, he has also worked on calibration of predictive models, including both first-order and second-order calibration methods. Kamil is currently a Senior Research Scientist at Spotify and previously held research positions at Microsoft Research Cambridge and the University of Oxford. He received his PhD in Machine Learning from UCL.

Stacy will reflect on her career journey in engineering and what has continued to motivate her over more than 30 years in the profession. Her expertise spans urban streets and rural highway networks, across government, consultancy and contractor organisations, covering design, construction and business development.

Stacy will share her different experiences in the industry and how finding a passion for her work has shaped her perspective provided a guiding light for her career. Her session will offer a personal perspective on persistence, collaboration and supporting others as your career evolves. Drawing on lessons from complex programmes and leadership roles, she will talk about the role engineers can play in shaping healthier, safer and more liveable places, and why creating better streets and public spaces continues to matter so much to her.

Speaker bio
Stacy is a Technical Director, Fellow and Chartered Civil Engineer of the Institution of Civil Engineers, with over 30 years experience leading the technical delivery of multidisciplinary transport projects. She has extensive experience managing multiple multidisciplinary teams and projects simultaneously, delivering high-quality outcomes within tight deadlines and budgets, and developing honest, trustworthy relationships with clients.

Over the past 10 years, Stacy has focused on active travel, working across the full project lifecycle, from concept and stakeholder engagement through to detailed design and implementation.

Stacys work has included high-profile programmes such as the London 2012 Olympics, Thames Tideway and Kingston Mini-Holland and she is currently supporting Active Travel England. She is also involved in business development and work winning, and leads WSPs cross-discipline Active Travel Strategy, helping to align expertise across the business to deliver innovative, high-quality outcomes.

Alongside her technical and leadership roles, Stacy has made a significant contribution to the profession through mentoring, professional development and industry networks. In the first part of the talk, we examine unfolding networks, which emerge from reformulating outputs of iterative algorithms as neural networks outputs, to solve inverse problems. As such, unfolding networks are applied in critical domains, e.g., medical imaging, where robustness is crucial to prevent catastrophic failures. We provide the first adversarial generalization error bounds for unfolding networks, perturbed during training and test times, highlighting how the network architecture ripples out to its generalization ability. Our experimental results conform with our derived theory and showcase the beneficial role of overparameterization to the network robustness. In the second part of the talk, we introduce a methodology for creating structured adversarial attacks, that highly hurt robustness, even of adversarially trained networks. Our approach hinges upon tools from frame theory in particular, overcomplete spatial-frequency transforms, which are popular tools for image processing tasks. By representing the attacks with respect to these transforms, we improve their effectiveness, even across unseen, target models. We assess the quality of our method on standardized datasets and models, with results showcasing that our proposed attack outperforms the examined baselines and exposes vulnerabilities even of defended models, while highly preserving visual structure.
