The role of Algorithms and Applications in the convergence of Quantum, AI and HPC
The Centre for Sectoral Economic Performance is pleased to invite you to its inaugural seminar with Dr Juan Bernabé-Moreno (IBM Research Europe), who will give a talk titled "The role of Algorithms and Applications in the convergence of Quantum, AI and HPC".

The Centre for Sectoral Economic Performance is pleased to invite you to its inaugural seminar with Dr Juan Bernabé-Moreno (IBM Research Europe), who will give a talk titled The role of Algorithms and Applications in the convergence of Quantum, AI and HPC.

The event will be followed by a networking lunch. This is in-person only event.

About the Talk

The convergence of Quantum Computing, Artificial Intelligence, and High-Performance Computing represents one of the most significant architectural shifts in modern computing. As quantum processors move from experimental curiosity to commercial-grade processors, algorithms and applications are emerging as the critical bridge connecting these three domains. This seminar explores how hybrid algorithmic frameworks are enabling new classes of problems to be solved across this integrated compute stack. Drawing on industry developments such as IBM’s Quantum-Centric Supercomputing architecture, we examine how the CPU-GPU-QPU paradigm is reshaping workflows in simulation, materials science, and machine learning. The seminar highlights that realizing the full promise of this convergence depends not on hardware alone, but on co-designing algorithms and applications that can scale across classical and quantum resources in tandem.

Speaker’s Bio

Dr Juan Bernabé-Moreno is one of few technology leaders to have operated on both sides of the technology equation: 10+ years applying data and AI to transform major European corporations as Chief Data and AI Officer — at E.ON and Telefónica — and 4+ years creating the foundational technology that will transform industries next, as Director of IBM Research Europe (Ireland & UK), partnering with NASA and ESA.

As IBM Research Lab Director, he leads teams across three labs in Dublin, Daresbury, and Hursley, advancing AI and quantum computing while engaging directly with UK and Irish governments on national technology strategies. He is also responsible for driving IBM’s Algorithms and Applications Research mission with NASA and the European Space Agency, leading researchers across seven global labs to explore how the convergence of AI and quantum computing can transform science and engineering. This partnership has delivered award-winning foundation models for science with over one million downloads, the first AI models deployed in space, and a NASA Agency Group Achievement Award.

Dr Bernabé-Moreno holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Granada, has over 50 publications, and lectures on quantum applications and intelligent systems at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. He is a regular voice in international media — including Malcolm Gladwell’s Smart Talks and The Times Tech Podcast — and a frequent speaker at major events such as IBM Think, Web Summit, and Wired.

Wave propagation for the harmonic oscillator in an Aharonov–Bohm field

Title

Wave propagation for the harmonic oscillator in an Aharonov–Bohm field

Abstract

A charged quantum particle in a magnetic field is described by the Schrödinger equation with a magnetic potential. In the Aharonov–Bohm case, the magnetic field is concentrated inside a very thin solenoid, but the magnetic flux still influences the quantum motion outside it.

In joint work with Ari Laptev, we study the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a two-dimensional harmonic oscillator in an Aharonov–Bohm field. We obtain a global semiclassical description of the corresponding propagator away from trajectories passing through the origin. Away from this singular set, the result shows that the evolution has the same kind of global semiclassical description as in the regular harmonic oscillator. I will begin by introducing the basic model and the main tool used to approximate the integral kernel of the propagator, and then turn to the Aharonov–Bohm case.

Distinguished Enterprise Lecture | Building climate innovation platforms at scale – a perspective from the Global South
The Department of Chemical Engineering's annual Distinguished Seminar Series returns for the 2026 season!

THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT.

Speaker: Nalin Agarwal, Founding Partner at the Climate Collective Foundation (South Asia’s largest climate tech startup support platform); and, a Founding Partner at the Climate Seeds Fund (an upcoming pre-Series A VC fund for Indian climate tech startups).

Talk: Building Climate Innovation Platforms at Scale – a perspective from the Global South
This Distinguished Enterprise Lecture reflects on a journey from serial founder-entrepreneur to co-founding Climate Collective Foundation, South Asia’s largest climate tech startup platform – now expanding across the Global South.

The keynote focuses on a central question: how do we move from building successful companies to building ecosystems that consistently produce climate innovation at scale?

Drawing on real-world experience, the talk examines the role of the ecosystem orchestrator and the enterprise choices that underpin it: platform design across acceleration, capital, piloting with large incumbents, and a vibrant community; blended financial models that align philanthropic grants, corporate demand, and commercial revenues; and partnership strategies spanning government, corporates/utilities, multilaterals (e.g. UNEZA@IRENA) and academia (e.g. Undaunted@51³Ô¹ÏÍø).

The talk will conclude with a forward look at the next phase of the Global South climate transition (and Climate Collective’s role in it); along with initial ideas and an open-forum discussion on collaboration opportunities with 51³Ô¹ÏÍø.

This lecture forms part of the Department of Chemical Engineering’s annual Distinguished Seminar Series 2026, and is open to departmental staff and PhD students, as well as a quota for external persons. Registrations will open soon, watch this space.

TALK TITLE:Â
Chirality shapes matter: the landscape of nanomaterials for minimalistic peptides

ABSTRACT:
Minimalistic peptides composed of 2-3 amino acids are attractive building blocks for (nano)materials, by virtue of their low-cost, ease of preparation also on a large scale, great physico-chemical diversity, possibility to interact with enzymes and cells, and biodegradability. They can self-organize under a variety of conditions, including green solvents, to give rise to various macroscopic materials, spanning from gels to crystals,1 and even biomolecular glass.2,3

Our research group specializes in the design, characterization and application of these simple molecules, whereby amino acid chirality tailors peptide conformation, thus, the ability to self-organize into diverse nanomorphologies, spanning from nanoparticles,4 to nanorods,4 nanofibrils,1 and single- or multi-walled nanotubes of varying diameter.5-6 Applications span widely, from catalysis1,7 (photo-, organo-, and bio-), to extracellular matrix mimicry to guide cell behavior,8 molecular or ion separation,9 or formulation stabilizers for biotherapeutics.10

A new ground-breaking study in algorithmic human development is now open to all 51³Ô¹ÏÍø College students.

The novel Self-Attachment Technique and the Self-Initiated Humour Protocol have been developed as self-administered and algorithmic psychotherapy and laughter therapy, which have had great success in several pilot studies, including one in 2023 in strengthening users’ emotional wellbeing in addition to improvements in other aspects such as emotional self-regulation, self-compassion, resilience and use of self-enhancing humour.

We’re holding an introductory meeting remotely on zoom on Wednesday 11 February at 16:00 UK time.

Recruitment is now open for our new study in 2025. The study will be fully remote, consisting of 8 weekly presentations lasting between 25-45 minutes, and requiring 20 minutes of individual daily practice of exercises.

More information on the study can be found on our study information page. You can also direct any questions for our team to ahd@imperial.ac.uk.

Complex Photonic transport: From Localization to On-Chip Hardware Security
Complex Photonic transport: From Localization to On-Chip Hardware Security

Speaker : Dr Himadri Sahoo, (UT-TNW)

Abstract:
I will present a selection of my work on light transport in complex photonic systems, beginning with Anderson localization and anomalous transport in non-Hermitian hybrid media, and moving toward recent efforts on integrated photonic physical unclonable functions for secure authentication. I will briefly discuss localization in hybrid plasmonic and spoof-SPP structures, mention related studies in magnetic-fluid-based complex media, and then focus on current work on passive and active on-chip PUF architectures, including ring-resonator networks and exceptional-point-inspired directions. The aim is to highlight how concepts from complex wave transport can be carried into photonic hardware for information security.

Clinician-Scientist-Engineer Challenges Workshop: Paediatrics
Join us to explore opportunities to apply your engineering, technological, and AI solutions to clinical paediatrics challenges.

51³Ô¹Ï꿉۪s MedTechONE and the Centre for Paediatrics and Child Health are partnering for the ‘Clinician-scientist-engineer challenges workshop in paediatrics’ on 30th April, 4 – 6 pm, Queens Tower Rooms.

The event follows similar successful events focused on intervention, diagnosis, and treatment and will bring together paediatrics researchers, clinicians, engineers, and experts in a range of disciplines to explore clinically relevant challenges and how 51³Ô¹Ï꿉۪s interdisciplinary expertise can be harnessed to solve them. Solutions might include developing new technology (both software and hardware) or repurposing existing technology (including AI and machine learning).

This event is open to 51³Ô¹ÏÍø academics and clinical academics.

Are you an engineer or scientist? Do you have a solution to one of our challenges? Register below to discuss your innovations with our clinicians!

The Clinical Challenges

Dr Cheryl Battersby – Investigating non-invasive, non-touch monitoring methods for heart rate, ECG, and CO2 for ventilated infant patients. Additionally, how can we improve the affordability of incubators and thermo-environments for pre-term infants?

Dr Toranj Wadia – Ultrasound is a growing technology we areused in ICU, but hands on acquisition by trained people is still a limiting factor as training takes a long time and some new operators don’t feel confident in acquiring images.
It would be valuable to have ultrasound pads with technology to locate the heart, lungs, intracranial vessels would enable staff to acquire images which could be reviewed remotely by experienced clinicians.
Other potential uses would be to enable non-cardiology trained staff to check for pleural/pericardial effusion or look at brain perfusion, in the midst of a cardiopulmonary resuscitation instead of a pulse check, and allow offsite clinicians like cardiologists to advise on management after reviewing images of a child admitted to a non cardiac centre.

Prof Aubrey Cunnington & Dr Claire Dunican – We have recently invented a new method to predict the trajectory of acute illness from a single blood sample. It uses a method called RNA velocity, which requires measurement of spliced and unspliced RNA transcripts. Our challenge for the engineers is to develop a rapid point-of-care testing platform to quantify the spliced and unspliced transcripts for a small number of genes in a blood sample, which can be used to predict which unwell children with infections will rapidly deteriorate and which children are not at risk of severe illness.

Dr Mari Viviers – At present image analysis is manual and time intensive. We are interested in using AI tools for vocal fold angle measurements, tracking tongue movements, tracking bolus movement, tracking hyo-laryngeal elevation etc.

We would welcome working with or at least having an exploratory discussion with a bioengineer if this type of project would be of interest.

Praneeth Vedagari – Cancelled investigation slots (e.g. MRIs) or additional requirement of sedation to do a procedure, place a large clinical and cost burden. Additionally, there is a lot of demand for tools which can improve a child’s familiarity with the hospital environment, their condition, or their compliance with medication and procedures.

Sophie Stockinger – Our current pressure area assessment workflow in paediatric intensive care is time-consuming and prone to delays. Skin photographs of pressure damage are currently taken using a digital camera and later uploaded to ICCA via cable, which creates workflow friction and can delay documentation at the bedside. These delays can also slow referral to tissue viability, and progression of skin damage may be missed if images are not captured promptly. This is also particularly important for admission body mapping, which we are currently documenting by hand on paper. This process is often inaccurate and does not provide a reliable visual record. There are digital wound imaging and scanning systems already on the market that not only photograph skin damage but can also detect early pressure injury and prompt earlier intervention. The unmet need is for a MedTech solution that streamlines bedside skin assessment, direct EPR/ICCA documentation, and clear prompts around repositioning requirements. Potential areas for innovation could include secure mobile imaging, automated upload, decision-support prompts, early pressure-damage detection, or dashboard visibility for the nurse in charge. I feel this would be a valuable opportunity to explore how engineering and digital design could improve pressure injury prevention, team communication, and patient safety in paediatric care

Joint Quantum and Matter Seminar: Measurement-Induced Phase Transitions
From Ensembles of Quantum Trajectories to Most-Likely Dynamics
Speaker: Alessandro Romito, Lancaster University

Measurement-Induced Phase Transitions: From Ensembles of Quantum Trajectories to Most-Likely Dynamics

Quantum systems exhibit complex dynamics characterised by information scrambling, giving rise to phenomena such as long-range entanglement and thermalisation. Local measurements can profoundly alter these dynamics by freezing local degrees of freedom, leading to new stationary state distributions and associated measurement-induced phase transitions (MiPTs). While measurement-induced dynamics is inherently stochastic, post-selecting specific detector readouts to isolate individual quantum trajectories yields deterministic dynamics with distinct phase transition characteristics.

In this talk, I contrast the quantum dynamics of individual post-selected trajectories with their collective statistical behaviour. I introduce a novel partially post-selected stochastic Schrödinger equation that captures controllable subsets of quantum trajectories, and exploit it to define the concept of the most likely trajectory. I demonstrate this framework on paradigmatic systems of Gaussian fermions and bosons, showing that the most-likely dynamics reproduces key qualitative features of the full ensemble dynamics. I further apply the formalism to interacting bosons in the Sine-Gordon model, where the most-likely trajectory approach captures the dynamics through a self-consistent harmonic approximation and reveals an entanglement phase transition from area-law to logarithmic-law scaling.

Together, these results establish a powerful framework for studying MiPTs in monitored quantum systems via deterministic nonlinear equations, applicable to both fermionic and bosonic platforms.

Buddhist Meditation: Online and In-person
Buddhist meditation can help you to unplug and detach from the stress of daily life. Open to anyone in the college leading a busy life, the meditation sessions are especially suitable for those seeking to reduce anxiety, re-align balance and learn self-compassion.

Buddhist meditation can help you to unplug and detach from the stress of daily life. These sessions are especially suitable for those seeking to reduce anxiety, re-align balance or practice loving kindness. It has plenty of time for meditation.
