Young Scientist Day Poster Presentations

Research Degree students exhibited their posters

This year's annual Young Scientists Day took place on Monday 24th March at the Hammersmith Campus and was a great success

Throughout the day Research Degree students within the Department were able to share their research with others. In the morning Research Degree students exhibited their posters, giving staff and students the opportunity the browse the displays and ask questions and engage in the work of others. Posters were judged by a panel of academic staff and students. The prizes for the posters were awarded as follows:

1st prize was presented to Ian Harrison (Brain Sciences) with his poster titled ‘Sodium Valproate Induces Neuroprotection in the Lactacystin Model of Parkinson’s Via Histone Deacetylase Inhibition and the Upregulation of Neuroprotective Factors’.

2nd prize went to Ryan Mitchell (Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism) with his poster ‘ADCY5 Couples Glucose to Insulin Secretion in Human Islets’ .

3rd prize was won by Ryan Russell (Infectious Diseases) with the poster ‘Inhibition of the inflammasome by the small hydrophobic protein of respiratory syncytial virus’.

The prize for the favourite poster title was awarded to Bentley Crudgington (Infectious Diseases) with the poster ‘Interfering with Pigs’.

The poster winners will represent the Department of Medicine at the Graduate School Summer Research Symposium on 18th July 2014. For further information about this event please follow the link: http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/graduateschool/events/symposia.

The results of the presentations were as follows:

1st prize was won by Ian Harrison (Brain Sciences) for his presentation on ‘Curing Parkinson’s with Epigenetics’.

2nd prize went to Will Jackson (Immunology and Inflammation) who presented ‘Too fat to move: blood lipids and innate immunity’.

3rd prize was awarded to Natalia Reglińska-Matveyev (Experimental Medicine) for her talk on ‘TFPI cofactor function of protein S: essential role of the protein S SHBG-like domain’.

Three Post doc presentations, arranged by the Department’s Early Careers Committee, followed the above research degree students’ 3 minute thesis presentations. They were:

David Bernardo Ordiz (Immunology) with his thesis titled ‘Dendritic cell compartmentalization through the human Colon’.

Edward Chambers (Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism) with his thesis titled ‘Targeted delivery of propionate to the colon stimulates the release of anorectic gut hormones and suppresses appetite in humans’, and;

Daniel Gonzalez Carter (Brain Sciences) with his thesis titled ‘Developing nanoparticles as delivery vehicles to penetrate the blood-brain barrier’.

The 1st prize Post-Doc presentation went to Edward Chambers (Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism) for his presentation about ‘Targeted delivery of propionate to the colon stimulates the release of anorectic gut hormones and suppresses appetite in humans’.

Special congratulations go to Ian Harrison (Division of Brain Sciences) who has won 1st poster prize for two years running, as well as being awarded 1st prize for his 3-minute presentation. Ian will now represent the Department of Medicine at the Graduate School’s 3-minute competition which will be taking place on 11th June 2014.
