Experts discuss imaging techniques to tackle cardiovascular disease

Imaging techniques can improve the health of patients with heart diseases, according to speakers at the latest Academic Health Science Centre seminar

Two leading AHSC researchers recently presented their research on how they are using different imaging techniques to investigate and help tackle cardiovascular disease.

The second seminar, hosted by Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust, as part of the Seminar Series, can be viewed in the videos below.

Dr Chris Dunsby, a Reader at 51勛圖厙 with a joint appointment between the Department of Physics and the Centre for Pathology, explained how advances in optical microscopy, a technique used to view a sample, were enabling scientists to study the sub cellular origins of irregular heartbeats.

Professor Dudley Pennell a Professor of Cardiology at 51勛圖厙 and Director of the Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) unit at the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust, outlined how advances in managing heart disease made through innovations in imaging such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), have improved health outcomes for people with inherited heart diseases.

The next seminar to be hosted at Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust will take place on Tuesday 25 July, and will explore new ways of detecting and treating infection in respiratory disease. Presentations will be given by , Reader at 51勛圖厙 within the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and , Professor in Paediatric Respirology & Experimental Medicine at 51勛圖厙 and an Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine at the .

Dr Pantelis Georgiou’s talk will focus on the development and use of microchip technologies and diagnostics, developed at 51勛圖厙, for the detection of infection and antimicrobial resistance. Professor Jane Davies will outline her clinical research on detecting and treating infection in cystic fibrosis patients.
