Canvas & 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Learning Analytics

Canvas is 51³Ô¹ÏÍø's new Learning Management System (LMS), being introduced from the 2026–27 academic year. As Canvas is rolled out across the University, 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Learning Analytics is evolving to take advantage of the richer, more consistent data it provides.

This page explains how Canvas supports 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Learning Analytics, what this means for staff, and how the way assessments are configured will directly influence the quality of Learning Analytics dashboards.

Primary Actions

What is Canvas?

Canvas is 51³Ô¹ÏÍø’s new Learning Management System, providing a single platform for teaching and learning across the University.

The Learning Management System project page provides information about the Canvas rollout, timelines and transition from Blackboard and Insendi.

ICT’s Canvas help pages for staff provide practical guidance on using Canvas, including support with courses, assignments, assessment and grading.

How does this affect 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Learning Analytics?

The introduction of Canvas marks a significant step forward for 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Learning Analytics.

Canvas will enable richer learning analytics reporting of:

• In-year provisional marks

• Assessment submissions

• Student engagement with learning materials and activities

This will support data-informed:

• Personal Tutoring

• Learning & teaching enhancements

• Annual module reviews

Until now, incorporating assessment data into Learning Analytics dashboards has been challenging due to the University's use of multiple learning management systems and differing approaches to assessment setup. Canvas provides the opportunity to standardise assessment data, making richer reporting possible across the institution.

One of the highest-priority requests during consultations with Personal Tutors was the inclusion of in-year marks in a dashboard. Staff consistently told us that seeing provisional marks throughout the academic year would provide the most valuable insight into how their tutees were progressing.

Canvas provides the functionality to make this possible.

What we need from you

To achieve this, assessments need to be configured consistently using the recommended Canvas assessment setup and naming conventions.

This will help 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Learning Analytics identify assessment submissions and provisional marks that count towards final grades, supporting more meaningful insights for staff and students.

Progress Update

The 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Learning Analytics team is working on the incorporation of Canvas data into 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Learning Analytics dashboards.
