51³Ô¹ÏÍø is committed to ensuring a positive environment for staff and students from diverse backgrounds, ages, sexual orientations, caring responsibilities, disabilities, races, religions, and all other personal characteristics.

At the Careers Service, we recognise and celebrate the rich diversity of our community; it makes us stronger, more innovative and more creative. We encourage the organisations we work with to seek diversity in their talent and are open to discussions about the barriers that remain.

Throughout the year, we work collaboratively with students from a variety of underrepresented groups to ensure their voices are heard and to best support their interests when organising events. Furthermore, where possible, we prioritise students from underrepresented groups within our activities to help bring about change. Below is a sample of some of our regular events that have a focus on diversity and inclusion.

We are eager to work with your recruitment or EDI teams on bespoke events to complement our delivery. Please contact us at employers@imperial.ac.uk if you are interested.

Please note that we adhere to 51³Ô¹ÏÍø's Conference Policy.

Disability and neurodiversity

It is important to us to support our students with disabilities and neurodivergent, mental health and long-term health conditions.

Our Careers Consultant, Mark Allen, liaises directly with 51³Ô¹ÏÍø's Disability Advisory Service (DAS) to ensure our support is accessible. He can be reached at m.allen@imperial.ac.uk.

Students looking to discuss their professional journeys can request a referral from the Disability Advisory Service, offering them a longer appointment with any accommodations they might need.

Throughout the year, we host our Finding inclusive employers and effective applications workshop, tailored to autistic students. We also advertise accessible and inclusive opportunities via JobsLive, our careers portal.

LGBTQIA+

Every February, in honour of LGBT+ History Month, we host our Finding inclusive employers workshop, open to LGBTQIA+ students and staff.

This session is an opportunity to explore the importance of inclusion in the work place, discover what rights and protections exist, learn to identify genuinely inclusive employers and take home the practical tools and resources used to research and assess organisations.

Underrepresented groups

Our Work Shadowing Scheme gives students insight into a specific job role and workplace culture they may be considering. It is a short yet enriching experience aimed at first-year undergraduates.

Our Alumni Mentoring Scheme promotes and supports a structured relationship between alumni and current students, whereby alumni can share their professional experiences, personal insights and employability advice.

For both these programmes, we prioritise applications from students from underrepresented groups to improve their prospects by fostering a greater understanding of the workplace, enhancing their aspirations and boosting their confidence.
