Exchange Student Research Colloquium

Module aims

In this module, designed for incoming Exchange Students, you will undertake a supervised mini-project in an area of Computing research, alongside weekly group sessions. You will define and investigate a focused research question, critically engage with relevant academic literature, and apply appropriate research or technical methods. In weekly colloquium sessions, you will report on your progress, discuss recently read papers, exchange feedback with peers, and reflect on approaches used across projects. You will communicate and defend your work through a written report and an oral presentation. 

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this module, you will be able to:
- formulate a focused research question and design a feasible programme of investigation;
- critically evaluate and synthesise academic literature relevant to a Computing research problem;
- justify the selection of, and apply, appropriate research methods or technical approaches;
- analyse research findings and critically evaluate their validity, limitations and implications;
- reflect critically on the research process and identify appropriate directions for further work; and
- present and defend research methods, findings and conclusions through written and oral communication.

Module syllabus

You will undertake an individual mini-project in an area of Computing research under the guidance of an assigned project Supervisor. The precise subject matter will depend upon the project, but the module will normally include:
- defining and refining a focused research question;
- planning and managing a short research project;
- identifying, critically evaluating, and synthesising relevant academic literature;
- selecting and applying appropriate research or technical methods;
- undertaking implementation, experimentation, analysis or theoretical investigation -- as appropriate;
- evaluating results, limitations and potential directions for further work;
- considering research integrity, reproducibility, and responsible research practice -- where relevant;
- reporting progress and discussing research literature within a scholarly group setting; and
- communicating research methods and findings in written and oral forms.

Teaching methods

The module comprises a one-hour introductory lecture, a one-hour interim progress session, a one-hour final overview session, 15 hours of structured, group-based colloquium sessions, 7 hours of project-specific supervision, and independent research.
The introductory lecture presents the module structure, expectations, assessment requirements, research planning, engagement with academic literature and principles of responsible research practice. The interim session provides an opportunity to review progress, refine the project scope and methods, and address any emerging challenges. The final overview session supports the consolidation of findings and preparation of the final report and presentation.
During the colloquium sessions, you will report on your progress, discuss recently read research papers, explain methodological or technical decisions, identify challenges and receive constructive feedback from the Module Leader and your peers. Discussion of the different projects will enable students to compare research approaches and learn from work undertaken across a range of Computing topics.
Between sessions, you will independently undertake the reading, research, technical work, analysis and preparation required for your project, supported by subject-specific guidance from your project Supervisor.

Assessments

Formative assessment will take place throughout the module. During the colloquium sessions, you will report on your progress, discuss relevant research papers and receive feedback from the Module Leader and your peers. Your project Supervisor will provide additional project-specific guidance and feedback.

Summative assessment comprises:
- an individual research project report of approximately 20 pages, worth 80% of the module mark;
- an individual oral presentation of approximately 15 minutes, followed by questions and discussion, worth 20% of the module mark.

The report will assess the definition and execution of the project, critical engagement with relevant literature, justification and application of appropriate methods, analysis and evaluation of the findings, critical reflection, and the clarity of academic writing.

The presentation will assess your technical understanding, the originality and independence of your work, the achievement of the project objectives, your critical evaluation of the work and its limitations, and your ability to explain and defend the project in response to questions.

Both assessment components must be passed separately to pass the module.

You will receive regular verbal feedback from the Module Leader and your peers during the colloquium sessions, together with project-specific feedback from your assigned Supervisor. Feedback will address the project scope, engagement with the literature, research methods, progress, analysis and communication.
Before final submission, you may submit a report outline or one selected draft section for formative feedback.
Written feedback will be provided on the final report and oral presentation. Provisional marks will be released once marking and moderation for the cohort are complete by the July Exam Board; official marks will be released by Registry.

You will be supported throughout the module by an assigned project Supervisor, who provides subject-specific guidance on your mini-project, and by the Module Leader, who facilitates the colloquium sessions and advises on research planning, engagement with the literature and academic communication. Your peers in the colloquium provide further support through structured discussion and feedback. Common resources on literature searching, critical appraisal, research methods, research integrity, academic writing, and research presentations are provided through the learning materials of the module, and the Module Leader will signpost relevant 51³Ô¹ÏÍø support services, such as Library services and academic writing support, which may be particularly useful to students studying at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø on exchange.
