Learn communication techniques to help you develop talks and activities for children and young people. This is a highly interactive session where you will have the opportunity to practise communicating your research in an engaging and accessible way, and work with peers to develop talks, presentations and activities.
The course also covers the practical aspects of working with younger audiences, including guidance on safeguarding, behaviour management, communicating with teachers and schools, and finding opportunities to work or volunteer with young people.
This course is open to Research Degree Students, MRes, Postdocs and Research Fellows
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this workshop you will be able to:
- Identify topics within your research specialism that interest and inspire younger audiences
- ¸é±ð³¦´Ç²µ²Ô¾±²õ±ð the benefits of engaging children and young people with research
- Practice using appropriate language, examples and activities to engage young audiences
- Develop an understanding of the practical considerations when working with you children and young people
- Apply your communication skills through opportunities with the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Outreach Team and other organisations.
Please note that if you have attended Academic Leader Training run by the Outreach Office, you should not attend this course, as the material overlaps
Further Information
To help you make the most of the session, you will be asked to watch a short pre-course video and prepare a very brief talk about your research (this does not need to be perfect or fully developed).
As this is a practical, interactive workshop, participants are encouraged to engage actively throughout the session. This includes delivering a short presentation, and giving and receiving constructive feedback. Active participation will help you gain the maximum benefit from the course.
