Involving communities in two-way engagement with your research can help improve its quality, relevance and impact.
In this practical course run by 51³Ô¹ÏÍø’s Public and Community Engagement team, you will have the opportunity to explore the benefits of engaging the public in participatory research, when it is appropriate/beneficial to take this approach and the key considerations to ensure responsible research and innovation.
You will explore power dynamics and how to build trust, through the use of case studies and group activities. This course is relevant to anyone considering a participatory approach during part or all of the research cycle in any research area or discipline.
This course is open to Research Degree Students, MRes, Postdocs and Research Fellows
Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this session you will be better able to:
- Differentiate the breadth of participatory research approaches and outcomes (e.g. citizen science, co-production, co-creation)
- Recognise when and why to use a participatory research approach
- Identify practical and ethical aspects of participatory research approaches (e.g. power dynamics, ownership, remuneration)
- Use facilitation techniques to lead participatory workshop activities
Prerequisites:
Participants are strongly advised to attend the ECRI accredited Core Public Engagement Masterclass, or have equivalent skills, before attending this session.

This session is run by the Public and Community Engagement Team and open to 51³Ô¹ÏÍø staff, doctoral students and postgraduate research masters students. The sign up is slightly different to some other ECRI courses.
