In this study, a statistical framework is introduced to assess the suitability of various state estimation (SE) methodologies for the purpose of distribution system state estimation (DSSE). The existing algorithms adopted in the transmission system SE are reconfigured for the distribution system. The performance of three SE algorithms has been examined and discussed in standard 12-bus and 95-bus UK-GDS network models.

Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) algorithm, a powerfuloff-line batch training method for neural networks, is adaptedhere for online estimation of power system dynamic behavior.A special form of neural network compatible with the feedbacklinearization framework is used to enable non-linear self-tuningcontrol. Use of LM is shown to yield better closed-loop performancecompared to conventional recursive least square (RLS) approach. For successive disturbance use of LM in conjunction withnon-linear neural network structure yields faster convergencecompared to RLS. A case study on a test system demonstratesthe effectiveness of the online LM method for both linear andnonlinear estimation over RLS estimation (linear).

This paper introduces a technique for meter placement for the purpose of improving the quality of voltage and angle estimates across a network. The proposed technique is based on the sequential improvement of a bivariate probability index governing relative errors in voltage and angle at each bus. The meter placement problem is simplified by transforming it into a probability bound reduction problem, with the help of the two sided-Chebyshev inequality. A straightforward solution technique is proposed for the latter problem, based on the consideration of 2-$sigma$ error ellipses. The benefits of the proposed technique are revealed by Monte Carlo simulations on a 95-bus UKGDS network model

This paper focuses on the refinement of standard Hilbert–Huang transform (HHT) technique to accurately characterize time varying, multicomponents interarea oscillations. Several improved masking techniques for empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and a local Hilbert transformer are proposed and a number of issues regarding their use and interpretation are identified. Simulated response data from a complex power system model are used to assess the efficacy of the proposed techniques for capturing the temporal evolution of critical system modes. It is shown that the combination of the proposed methods result in superior frequency and temporal resolution than other approaches for analyzing complicated nonstationary oscillations.
