A simple physical low pressure discharge lamp model has been proposed in this paper. The new model is based on the physical processes inside a fluorescent lamp by considering the increasing rate of electron density and the ambipolar diffusion process. The model can accurately predict not only the lamp electrical terminal characteristics but also the electron density and electron temperature inside the fluorescent lamp. The results are comparable with the predictions from the complicated plasma models. The simple lamp model can accurately predict the lamp characteristics at both high and low operating frequencies, and the voltage spikes caused by arc re-ignition at each half cycle when the lamp is operated at mains frequency. This model can be easily implemented into MATLAB/Simulink as a simple, accurate and user-friendly CAD tool. © 2009 IEEE.

This paper presents a dynamic thermal model of a LED system and a control strategy for optimal power point tracking (OPPT). The control strategy is based on the general theory which links the photometric, electric and thermal behaviors of LEDs together. The control implementation enables the optimal operating of the LED systems to be determined dynamically. By measuring the ambient temperature and the heatsink temperature of LED system, the proposed control scheme allows the LED system to operate at the optimal dynamic operating points at which maximum luminous flux is generated. Practical tests have been carried out to verify the model and the general theory. © 2009 IEEE.

Oscillatory behavior is a key property of many biological systems. The small-gain theorem (SGT) for input/output monotone systems provides a sufficient condition for global asymptotic stability of an equilibrium, and hence its violation is a necessary condition for the existence of periodic solutions. One advantage of the use of the monotone SGT technique is its robustness with respect to all perturbations that preserve monotonicity and stability properties of a very low-dimensional (in many interesting examples, just one-dimensional) model reduction. This robustness makes the technique useful in the analysis of molecular biological models in which there is large uncertainty regarding the values of kinetic and other parameters. However, verifying the conditions needed in order to apply the SGT is not always easy. This paper provides an approach to the verification of the needed properties and illustrates the approach through an application to a classical model of circadian oscillations, as a nontrivial "case study," and provides a theorem in the converse direction of predicting oscillations when the SGT conditions fail.

Increased Power Output from Piezoelectric Energy Harvesters by Pre-Biasing
, PowerMEMS 2009, Pages: 75-78, ISSN: 2151-3155This paper presents, for the first time, experimental results demonstrating a new approach to increasing the power output of piezoelectric energy harvesters by applying a bias charge at the beginning of each half cycle of motion. Ultimate power limits of inertial energy harvesters depend only on the device size and nature of the excitation, rather than on the transduction mechanism. However, practical devices generally perform well below the theoretical limit, often because a sufficiently high transducer damping force cannot be achieved. For suchcases, we show that the generator effectiveness is improved by a pre-biasing technique, and present simulationresults with experimental verification. These results show that the effectiveness of the piezoelectric generator isimproved by more than 10 times compared to an optimised purely resistive load. In practice our gains were limited by the voltage breakdown of the components used.
