About
The UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC) carries out world-class, interdisciplinary research into sustainable future energy systems. Our whole systems research programme addresses the challenges and opportunities presented by the transition to a net zero energy system and economy.
Established in 2004, UKERC is an independent research centre, with researchers based in over 20 different institutions throughout the UK, including 51³Ô¹ÏÍø College. Our headquarters are based at CEP, where a small team of professional services and research staff work. The HQ team delivers our central activities which supports both the research programme and the wider UK energy research community. Activities include engaging with stakeholders, supporting career development and capacity building, and enhancing international collaboration.
Our 2024-2029 research focuses on four challenges: delivering low carbon infrastructure, providing flexibility in a high renewables system, energy security and the geopolitics of the energy transition, and affordability, justice, and equity. The Centre also involves the UKERC Public Engagement Observatory, and the Energy Data Centre.
UKERC also acts a focal point for UK energy research and a gateway between the UK and the international energy research communities. We work to strengthen the UK’s presence as a major global player in energy research, and to provide a focal point for international collaboration.
