World Weather Attribution (WWA) is an international collaboration of climate scientists that investigates how climate change influences extreme weather events. By combining weather observations with climate modelling, the team can rapidly assess whether human-caused climate change made an event more likely or more severe.

Founded in 2014 by Dr Friederike Otto, Dr Geert Jan van Oldenborgh and Climate Central, WWA has helped transform attribution science. Rather than only explaining that climate change increases the risk of extreme weather over time, the team can now provide evidence within days or weeks of an event, helping answer one of the most common questions people ask: Did climate change play a role?

WWA's research covers heatwaves, floods, droughts, wildfires, storms and other extreme weather events around the world. Alongside analysing the role of climate change, the team also examines how factors such as infrastructure, inequality and preparedness affect the impacts on communities, providing evidence to support better adaptation and resilience.

Since its launch, WWA has completed more than 100 rapid attribution studies, with many of its methods and findings published in peer-reviewed journals. By making results publicly available soon after major weather events, WWA helps inform public understanding, policy decisions, and climate action around the world.
