The Critical Environmental Social Sciences (CrESS) Research Group brings together scholars committed to interrogating the social, political, economic and cultural dimensions of environmental and spatial change. Grounded in interdisciplinary and radical traditions, including political ecology, human and urban geography, decolonial and feminist studies, and science and technology studies, our work rethinks, qualifies and challenges dominant narratives of sustainability, development and growth.   

We engage critically and reflexively with pressing global issues—climate crisis, resource extraction, biodiversity loss, environmental injustice, infrastructural violence, urban inequality and just transitions- while centering questions of power, (de)coloniality, dispossession, participation, deliberative democracy, grassroots innovation and resistance at the epicenter of our analysis.   

CrESS provides a dynamic space for critical, collaborative and engaged scholarship. Through empirical research, theoretical innovation, policy, and civil society engagements, we aim to cultivate alternative imaginaries and practices that promote generative and empowering paradigms. We hope to catalyze transformation towards social, spatial and environmental justice for present and future generations, link diverse knowledges with action, and strengthen equitable, democratic decision-making opening pathways for alternative, emancipatory futures.
