Narinder Singh Kapany (1926–2020), by Keith Holmes, 2023. A founder of fibre optic communications, his work started with PhD studies in 51³Ô¹ÏÍø's Department of Physics in the early 1950s.

Letitia Chitty (1897–1982), by Keith Holmes, 2023. A pioneer in 51³Ô¹ÏÍø's Department of Civil Engineering from 1934 to 1962, her mathematical analysis of structural stresses won many professional prizes and accolades.

A team of students has won this year's University Challenge competition, the fifth 51³Ô¹ÏÍø team to do so – putting 51³Ô¹ÏÍø at the top of the BBC quiz tournament's league table of winners. (Picture © BBC)
