What does a crime writer think about when creating a character? How do they build suspense, direct the narrative and engage with contemporary life and culture?

Drawing on her experience as the author of almost a dozen crime novels in various sub genres,  will take us inside the craft of contemporary crime fiction from a writer’s point of view.

We will explore how writers create compelling plots, unreliable narrators, morally ambiguous characters and the sense of unease that keeps readers turning the pages.

Along the way, you will consider how recent thrillers have reimagined the genre, moving beyond familiar roles and expectations to create complex, surprising and unsettling characters and stories.

Through discussion of selected novels, extracts, and screen examples, we will look at the craft of thriller writing and start working on some of your own ideas. The sessions will offer a supportive environment where positive and constructive feedback is encouraged.

This course is suitable for anyone interested in reading or writing crime fiction, contemporary writing, popular culture or creative writing.

No specialist knowledge is required and everyone is welcome.
