Poetry can capture moments, emotions and ideas in ways no other form of writing can. This course offers a welcoming introduction to the pleasures of reading and discussing poetry together.

Led by Britta Giersche, we will explore how poems create meaning through language, imagery, rhythm and form, and consider how poetry connects to personal experience, history and contemporary culture. Through close reading and shared discussion, we will encounter a wide range of poems from different periods and traditions, discovering how poets shape words to evoke powerful responses in their readers.

The sessions are designed to be lively, supportive and discussion-focused. You will be encouraged to reflect on your own responses to poems and to gain confidence in talking about poetry with others. Occasional creative exercises may also be included to help illuminate how poetic techniques work in practice.

Whether you are completely new to poetry or looking at it again after time away from study, this course offers an enjoyable and engaging way to rediscover the richness and variety of the poetic tradition.
