Philosophy can sometimes sound intimidating, but at its heart it asks questions many art lovers already think about. What makes something beautiful? Why do artworks move us? Can art teach us something about the world? Does it matter who made an artwork, or whether it is original?

On this course, Dr Matthew Rowe invites you to explore some of the most interesting philosophical ideas about art, beauty and culture in a clear, accessible and enjoyable way. You will begin with major thinkers from the Western philosophical tradition, including Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Hegel and Nietzsche, and consider how their ideas have shaped the way art has been made, judged and understood.

The course then moves into more recent debates in the philosophy of art. You will look at questions such as:

• What is an artwork?
• How do we interpret art?
• Are there different kinds of artistic creativity?
• What is the difference between art and craft?
• Do fakes and forgeries matter?
• And, how have ideas about art changed over time?

Throughout the course, philosophical ideas will be connected to the experience of looking at and thinking about art. Rather than treating philosophy as an abstract subject, the course will show how it can open up fresh and exciting ways of understanding visual culture.

You do not need any previous knowledge of philosophy or art history. All you need is curiosity and an interest in exploring art in a new way.
