Our travel policy is defined by the FCDO. If at the time of booking there was no travel restrictions then the policy will respond, subject to the terms and conditions. We would advise all travellers to regularly check FCDO travel advice for their destination and any countries in transit. If the advice changes to “against travel” and the traveller wishes to cancel or postpone their trip, they can submit a claim.
See the Travel and Personal Property Insurance Policy for details of what is covered and exclusions.
The process can be found on the Travel Insurance page.
We recommend that all guests have their own policy, which will allow for a smooth claims handling process.
However, limited cover is available for guest travelling on 51³Ô¹ÏÍø business. If this option is needed, please email Insurance .
If you’re travelling on 51³Ô¹ÏÍø business, you must register all trips to be covered by the policy.
Please go to the Travel Insurance page for more information and to complete your registration.
If your travel has been booked by a group leader, they will need to complete the form. Otherwise, you can complete the registration yourself.
The policy will respond to claims in the UK. You will be expected to register your trip where:
1. The cost of your accommodation and travel exceeds the policy excess of £50
2. You have completed a Field Work Risk Assessment (FW1), and your trip is considered high risk.
If you are travelling to a remote location, please email Insurance .
If an emergency, you will expect to use the emergency services. If this is not possible, please contact the emergency assistance provider you have identified on your risk assessment.
The policy is defined by the Foreign Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO).
The policy cover maybe limited where the FCDO advises against travel.
Territory under sanctions must be referred to insurers. This is to ensure that they can assist you if the event of an urgent claim.
Yes, providing they are accompanying you for the entire trip. If they leave before/after you, they must arrange their own travel insurance.
Providing your holiday is taken in the same country as that of the business travel, the policy will allow limited incidental days.
You may need to purchase a separate policy to cover the entire trip if your personal travel exceeds the limit.
Further information can be found here .
You should never travel against the advice of your doctor. If you are over the age of 75 the Personal Accident Benefit is restricted, but the Travel aspects are unaffected. You should check whether your trip requires a health check is undertaken.
Unless you are on a long-term secondment, the policy does not exclude pre-existing illnesses. However, you will be expected to have a sufficient supply of medications with you. The policy will provide assistance for urgent emergency treatment.
The travel insurance policy does not exclude pre-existing medical conditions, unless you are seconded for more than 12 months. In such cases, you will be expected to have separate health insurance in place.
Please note that the policy only covers individuals who are fit to travel. If a medical practitioner has advised against travel, the policy will not be applicable. There is no requirement for occupational health clearance to use the policy. However, if there are any concerns, we would recommend checking with them first.
Unfortunately, the system does not allow for changes. You will have to complete a new registration for any additional travellers.
If you require urgent assistance, please contact AIG/Lifeline Plus +44 (0)1273 456 463 (Lines open 24/7) or email LUPC claims quoting policy number 0010016145

If you experience a travel cancellation or disruption, we recommend the following steps before submitting a claim:
- Contact the Travel Provider: Reach out to the travel agent, airline, or hotel to request a refund or make alternative travel arrangements using your existing tickets and bookings.
- Assess Remaining Losses: If you still have unrecoverable losses after seeking refunds or alternative arrangements, proceed with submitting a claim.
- Submit Your Claim: Provide the original and amended itineraries along with any other relevant documents to substantiate your loss when submitting your claim in the usual manner.
You can print off and add your name to the Travel Certificate (log in required).
51³Ô¹ÏÍø has a policy for placement learning (which links to the Off-site working procedures especially when risks need assessing). Departments are responsible for managing your placement from preparation through to completion. Students who are undertaking a placement abroad as part of their degree programme should consult their academic department, and refer to the Placements website.
Students travelling abroad on a placement should read the Placements Abroad Handbook. The Handbook includes guidance on insurance for study, and in particular, work-based placements. Both students and their departmental advisors are encouraged to refer to it, especially when the aim is for the student to undertake a work-based placement as part of their degree or for extra-ECTS credit, and the department is handling a Placement Provider Information Form or equivalent.
Similarly, your department is responsible for managing any field work or trip, and again their processes will be guided by the College’s Off-site working procedures. Start the conversation with your Departmental undergraduate or postgraduate office.
All 51³Ô¹ÏÍø owned, leased and hired vehicles in the UK are covered. Private vehicles and vehicles hired overseas are not covered. See Motor insurance for more information on all three cases.
The Travel policy wording is available from the Travel Insurance page . Please note that Personal Belongings and Money are covered separately. The details are available from the same page.
If an organiser (not 51³Ô¹ÏÍø) has cancelled an event, then the policy should respond.
