AB - This paper presents a methodology for the back-analysis of complex geotechnical structures using metamodels, illustrated through the multi-propped deep excavation at Tottenham Court Road station, London. A database of 1943 finite element analyses was generated by varying 18 model parameters, from which six metamodels were trained, one per excavation phase, achieving coefficients of determination exceeding 0.977 on the test dataset. The parameters with the greatest influence on the wall movements were identified through a global sensitivity study based on Sobol indices. Back analysis of the deep excavation was performed by coupling the metamodels with a genetic algorithm. The calibrated parameters were verified against an independent finite element model, confirming the reliability of the proposed workflow and its suitability for implementation within the observational method.
