Spring-term In-Class Tests:
Your language in-class test will take place in your usual Horizon class time in the week commencing March 15th
Oral/Practical Assessments:
Your language oral or British Sign Language practical exam will take place in either the spring or summer term depending on the level. Further information will be circulated at the end of the Autumn term.
This page is aimed at students already registered on a Languages module within the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Horizons/I-Explore programmes. Below, you will find important links and information to get the most out of your language module.
The language modules currently offered free to 51³Ô¹ÏÍø undergraduates are Arabic, British Sign Language, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Russian and Spanish.
Classes are organized by year group as well as level and can be taken for degree credit, extra credit or non-credit.

Location
All our language classes are face to face unless otherwise advertised, and take place on the South Kensington campus (a map can be found here, you can also download the beta version of the My 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Campus app here. Room confirmation details will be sent to enrolled students the week prior to classes starting: please make sure to check your emails. Language modules are offered at a range of different levels, from complete beginners (Level 1) upwards. Please read the module descriptions and, if you are not sure which level to apply for, please — it takes about one minute.
Once the autumn term has started, a move to a lower/higher level must be discussed with your class teacher in the first instance and the move made as soon as possible - within the first two weeks of term at most. Should there be no spaces available in the correct level, you will be enrolled to an alternative Horizons/I-Explore module of your choice where possible.
Only for students taking French, German, Spanish or Italian
These classes prepare students registered on a degree with a year in Europe (or a Language for Science degree - see next tab) for their stay abroad. Students on such programmes need to attend these classes in addition to their Horizons classes.
The Year-in-Europe classes are tailored to students’ needs and usually focus on:
- developing your communicative skills within academic, scientific, and technical contexts;
- developing your intercultural awareness.
Classes take place on Fridays, 12.00-13.00 or 13.00-14.00.

These modules are offered to Life Sciences students registered on a combined degree in Biology/Biotechnology/ Biochemistry and are an integral part of their curriculum. They include:
- History and Politics (1st year)
- History of Science (2nd year)
- Translation (3rd/4th year)
They are taught in addition to the Horizons language and Year-in-Europe modules, with classes taking place on Thursdays.

You can find an assessment breakdown for each level, including weightings of each assessment element, by going to the relevant language's webpage. You will also find learning outcomes and indicative content there.
Communication of final grades
At the end of the academic year, an external examiner verifies marks and the marking procedures. Grades awarded are not final until ratified by the external examiner and confirmed by the Board of Examiners. You will receive your final grades for individual modules as well as overall year grades through My 51³Ô¹ÏÍø after the Board of Examiners has approved these; if you take a module for degree credit you will be given your final result as a percentage.
Extra credit results appear on transcripts as Pass, Merit or Distinction. Any fails will NOT be recorded for students who take 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Horizons for extra credit or non-credit.
Detailed marks and feedback
Results and feedback on each individual coursework piece will be communicated as per your module assessment calendars found on the VLE, usually two weeks after hand-in (later in the case of written examinations/ in-class tests, which are usually marked by two examiners). You may request feedback about your oral examination from the appropriate Language Coordinator once final grades have been published.
