The Section of Adult Infectious Disease undertakes world-leading research focussed on clinical infectious disease prevention, pathogenesis, and management in patients and populations. We have strong collaborations with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), while around one third of our faculty are clinical, with dual appointments within the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Healthcare NHS Trust. Academics in the Section participate in key cross-faculty initiatives, including the Centre for Bacterial Resistance Biology (CBRB), the Centre for Precision Vaccinology, and the Fleming Initiative (AMR). The Section also plays a central role in use of human challenge models to study infectious diseases.
The Section is based in modern facilities that house state of the art category 2 and category 3 pathogen containment laboratories on theHammersmith clinical campus, as well as the at Charing Cross, that is co-located with the clinical diagnostic laboratory to facilitate research of immediate clinical-relevance . Senior staff members have strong collaborative links across the global South including in South Africa, The Gambia, India, and Pakistan.
The Section is actively involved in undergraduate teaching, leading the Year 5-6 MBBS course in Infectious Diseases and GU Medicine, and contributing to tutoring, teaching and supervision for the MBBS, the iBSc, and Medical Biosciences BSc. The Section also hosts and directs the popular MSc in Molecular Medicine. As 51³Ô¹ÏÍø’s hub for infectious diseases academic training, including Academic Clinical Fellow and Clinical Lecturer recruitment, we welcome inquiries from clinicians who wish to undertake doctoral training, as well as non-clinical postgraduate students wishing to pursue a PhD in one of our research themes.

Section leadership
Professor Shiranee Sriskandan
Head of Section, Adult of Infectious Disease
Shiranee Sriskandan is Professor of Infectious Diseases and co-Director of the Centre for Bacterial Resistance Biology. Her research focusses on the potential mechanisms by which serious Gram positive pathogens cause disease, using the group A streptococcus (Streptococcus pyogenes) as a paradigm.
