Research themes and projects

Oceans and climate

The world's oceans play a fundamental role in mitigating the effects of our greenhouse gases. They have absorbed over 90% of the excess heat resulting from anthropogenic greenhouse gases emissions and take up roughly a third of all CO2 emitted by humans.

Marine conservation

This area of research links scientists from various departments interested in understanding threats to marine biodiversity and also in finding solutions to remove, mitigate or adapt to these threats.

Ocean observations

Some of 51³Ô¹ÏÍø's researchers conduct field expeditions near Antarctica, in the Arctic, or in the tropics, while others specialise in developing autonomous sensing and sampling technology, map the seafloor or conduct laboratory experiments.
