Evie Maifoshie, a NHLI PhD student, has won an award from the British Heart Foundation (BHF) for an image of her research on heart disease.

, a PhD student working under the supervision of Professors and and Dr at the National Heart and Lung Institute, has won an award from the British Heart Foundation (BHF) for an image of her research on heart disease,

The charity's annual competition, , aims to find the most striking and beautiful images from BHF funded scientists' life-saving work into heart disease. Evie's image, entitled 'Peacock Feathers', shows skin cells which have been manipulated to become heart muscle cells. It won first place in the category of the competition. This special award was given for entries from the field of regenerative medicine.

The BHF invited scientists who work on over 1,000 projects across the UK to submit the most exciting images and videos produced in the course of their work. The competition aims to highlight the potential for research to improve heart health in the UK.

The winning images and videos were chosen by a panel of experts made up of renowned anatomist, author and broadcaster , Guardian Science Correspondent and BHF Medical Director Professor .

Professor Weinberg said: "These images and videos allow us to marvel at the complexities and intricacies of the cells and molecules that combine to make our heart and circulation work".

Evie's image was also mentioned on the as picture of the day.
