Dr Abigail Clements has been appointed to a Lectureship in the CMBI with effect from 1 May 2013.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Abigail Clements to a Lectureship in the CMBI from 1 May 2013. Following her undergraduate studies at the University of Melbourne, Abigail completed her PhD in 2007 in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Melbourne studying virulence determinants of Klebsiella pneumoniae.  She then completed a short post-doctoral position at Monash University where she studied the evolution of membrane protein complexes from bacteria (Caulobacter crescentus) to mitochondria. In 2009 she was awarded a Marie Curie International Training Fellowship and moved to the UK to work with Professor Gad Frankel’s group, where her research focussed on bacterial T3SS effectors from pathogenic E. coli.

Research in Abigail’s laboratory currently focuses on structure/function studies of effector proteins that are common between the intracellular enteroinvasive E. coli and Shigella species and the extracellular pathogenic E. coli (enteropathogenic and enterohaemorrhagic E. coli). By studying the signalling pathways targeted by effectors of both intracellular and extracellular pathogens her research will lead to better understanding of the fundamental processes required for infection such as subversion of cellular trafficking and regulation of apoptosis.
