These Fellowships reward the most innovative PhD students across Europe. Two of the three Fellowships awarded have been won by DoC students.

The contest takes place every year and sees the winners each pocket £10,000 as well as the chance to be mentored by researchers based at .

Hanme Kim from the here in the Department of Computing was awarded for his proposal entitled “Visual SLAM and 3D recognition using an Event Based Camera.” The system is designed to be more efficient than traditional cameras as it takes advantage of low latency, high temporal resolution, wide dynamic range, and compressed visual information given by event-driven dynamic vision sensors. Hanme is supervised by who is a Professor of Robot Vision and is head of the Robot Vision Research Group.

Patrick Snape from the  here in the Department of Computing was awarded for his proposal “Recovering Facial Shape from Unconstrained Images”. The proposal focuses on extending the power of 3D morphable models with an algorithm that aligns and recovers a 3D model of a face from 2D images.Patrick is supervised by who is a lecturer in Pattern Recognition/Statistical Machine Learning for Computer Vision and is is Deputy Head of theVisual Information Processing Group.

Hanme was also awarded the first Europe Champion distinction by virtue of his proposal being the most innovative among those submitted from all the participating Qualcomm centres across the UK, Germany and Austria. As winner he  will receive an additional 10,000 Euros  and a trip to San Diego with the rest of the global QInF winners,  to interact with Qualcomm researchers.
