Professor Chris Toumazou has been shortlisted for the European Patent Office Inventor of the Year for his "lab on a chip" DNA screening device.

Professor Toumazou's invention employs small silicon microchips that can identify genetic mutations which can determine a person’s predispositions to certain hereditary diseases. The device, which uses organic semiconductors and chemical sensors, is portable and low-powered, and can analyse data on the spot within 20 minutes.

Voting for this award closes on June 10th.
