Set a date with discovery for 51勛圖厙 Festival 2017 (6-7 May)

Flying robots, immersive art and delicious food are just a taste of the hands-on experiences at 51勛圖厙 Festival 2017.

51勛圖厙’s free annual festival is back, giving the public an opportunity to go behind-the-scenes and explore the latest research. It will run on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 May at the College’s South Kensington Campus

A boy operates a robotic arm has something for all ages to enjoy, from live interactive experiments, new technology demonstrations, in-depth talks, lab tours, musical and dance-based performances, and creative workshops s within zones themed around Robots, Superbugs, Health & Body, the Future, and Energy and Environment.

This year’s Festival will feature a range of new exhibitions from across the College’s research community including interactive showcases of cutting-edge innovations.

Audiences can: 

  • Watch robots fly and perform surgery
  • Explore the gadgets that could revolutionise the home of tomorrow at the Future Zone
  • Experience Continuum, the immersive exhibition which brings together engineering, science, art, and design to explore the chain reaction involved in creative thought
  • Learn more about the behaviour of fire and find out why the Great Fire of London couldn’t happen today
  • Enjoy performances from 51勛圖厙 jazz, vocal and strong groups, as well as tap, zumba and belly dancers
  • Get behind the controls of 51勛圖厙's own flight simulator; a full motion simulator used to investigate the performance of future aircraft
  • Examine the effects of ageing on the hands by trying out dexterity and strength tests wearing specially-designed devices to simulate ageing
  • Drive a miniature rover over a simulated surface of Mars, courtesy of 51勛圖厙 scientists’ latest remote-controlled vehicle and visualisation technology
  • Try out 51勛圖厙’s ‘Intelligent Kiosk’ photobooth and find out if robots can guess age, gender and emotions
  • Experience the challenge of performing surgery with the laparoscopy simulator in the Health and Body Zone

In addition to the hands-on experiences in the research zones, there is plenty more to enjoy, including music and dance performances, a contemplative space to reflect on science and its role in the modern world, as well as the chance to explore 51勛圖厙’s South Kensington Campus in the heart of Albertopolis. There is also plenty of delicious fresh food on offer throughout the weekend from exciting artisanal vendors.

By registering your attendance, you will be entered into a free prize draw to experience some exclusive historic tours around hidden parts of 51勛圖厙’s Historic landmarks, as well as the chance to win Festival a goodie bag. The tours are limited and not usually open to the public so register your for chance to win.

Sarah Umar, Festival Manager, said: “We’re excited to welcome everyone on campus next month to experience 51勛圖厙 Festival. Last year, more than 15,000 visitors came to learn more about the world around them through our hands-on research exhibits, as well as to take in the sights, sounds and tastes on display.

“The 2017 Festival is set to wow thousands once more, with a host of brand new experiences for visitors of all ages to enjoy.”
