Europe science award

The International Science Council (ISC) of 180 international scientific Unions, Academies and Research Councils has awarded its , Director of Research at the Grantham Institute.

Ten awardees were selected "whose achievements in the context of science as a global public good are of the highest quality, and in this way bring great credit to the scientific community."

Dr Rogelj’s exceptional contribution to science, international scientific collaboration and policy engagement changed the global conversation in advance of the United Nations’ Paris Agreement, creating the target to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

Physics Fellow

Professor Steven Rose, from the Department of Physics has been elected a , for ‘significant contributions to the understanding of the atomic and radiation physics of high energy density plasmas in both laboratory and astrophysical settings’.

The APS Fellowship Program recognises members who have made advances in physics through original research and publication, or made significant innovative contributions in the application of physics to science and technology.

Professor Rose said: “I’m delighted and honoured to become a Fellow of the American Physical Society which plays such an important role for physics in the USA and worldwide.”

Sustainability success

The , made up of Innovation Design Engineering graduates Hanson Cheng, Siobhan Anderson, Hugo Richardson and Deepak Mallya, have won €200,000 in the Postcode Lotteries 2021 competition with their innovative concept to capture highly polluting tyre particles at source. 

The Green Challenge is one of the world’s biggest sustainability competitions with start-ups from Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden – the five Postcode Lotteries countries – submitting their solutions to make the world greener and more sustainable.

After pitching their ideas to an international jury, the Tyre Collective team came in second place, securing the €200,000 prize as well as six months of expert coaching to optimise their business opportunities.
