Professor Ian Walmsley joins global leaders to mark a milestone year for quantum science

51³Ô¹ÏÍø’s Provost, Professor Ian Walmsley, joined leading scientists, policymakers, and industry experts in Paris for the official launch of the  —a global initiative celebrating the profound impact and potential of quantum science and technology.

Held at UNESCO Headquarters, the event marked the start of a year-long campaign to advance quantum research, education, and industrial applications. Professor Walmsley, a world-renowned expert in quantum optics and photonics, represented 51³Ô¹ÏÍø’s commitment to pushing the frontiers of quantum science and fostering international collaboration.

A Year Dedicated to Quantum Innovation

Endorsed by the United Nations, the IYQ seeks to raise awareness of quantum science’s potential in areas such as secure communications, ultra-precise sensors, and next-generation computing. The launch event brought together leading voices in quantum technology to discuss strategies for accelerating progress and bridging the gap between research and real-world implementation.

Leading in quantum research, 51³Ô¹ÏÍø continues to play a central role in shaping the future of the field. The Centre for Quantum Engineering, Science and Technology (QuEST) is driving breakthroughs in quantum computing, communication, and sensing, with researchers actively contributing to major initiatives like the UK National Quantum Technologies Programme.
