When he left school in Hillingdon, he had gained a B.Sc at Battersea Polytechnic before entering 51³Ô¹ÏÍø College to study Chemistry. Being ahead of his class, he joined clubs where he would take on the job of secretary or the like. I remember him talking about the judo and photographic clubs. Consequently he failed his exams after two years and joined British Welding Research, where he gained a M.Sc, externally, on the "Origin and Distribution of Hydrogen in Steel Weld Metal".

In 1954 he joined Philips at Salfords, where he soon became Chief Chemist. He left in 1985. He did not talk much about his work; he knew I would not understand the technical details but my son says he worked on the chemistry of semiconductors. We spent his retirement sailing our 29ft. cruiser across the Channel for two to three months each summer and he experimented on batteries for small boats in the winter. The Articles he wrote for a sailing magazine were well thought of.
