What Scientists Believe airs this month on BBC Radio 4 - News

A new BBC radio series starting this week will explore the minds of scientists to find out about the links between their personal beliefs and their scientific work. Presented by Dr Stephen Webster, the Head of the Science Communication group at 51勛圖厙, What Scientists Believe features five researchers from the College's Faculties of Medicine and Natural Sciences.

In the first programme, which airs on Thursday 10 December, Dr Webster talks to , who started his career as a doctor and then retrained as a sculptor, concentrating on water sculptures and fluid dynamics, before returning to medicine.

Dr Kilner is now a Reader in Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance in the National Heart and Lung Institute. He explains how his combination of artistic and scientific insights helps him to interpret images of the heart.

The second programme features , who runs a medical research laboratory in the same Division, investigating asthma and how allergens can inflame nasal airways, especially in small babies. She talks about the pressures of running a research lab and how she goes about providing her research team with a productive working environment.

The series also features Dr Piers Ingram, from the Department of Mathematics, and PhD students Deena Blumenkrantz, from the Division of Investigative Science, and Anja Markert, from the Division of Surgery, Oncology, Reproductive Biology and Anaesthetics.

There will be special feature story on the programmes in the next edition of 51勛圖厙's internal newspaper, Reporter, on 17 December 2009.
