51³Ô¹ÏÍø confirmed its status as a powerhouse for company creation with the formation of 14 spinout companies in the past year.
The total matches the number of spinouts formed in the previous year, with healthy representation from all of 51³Ô¹ÏÍø’s faculties. Marika Reay, Cross-Faculty Commercialisation Director, 51³Ô¹ÏÍø, said: “Our team has worked hard to ensure we’re moving with the pace required to support the volume of spinout opportunities produced by 51³Ô¹ÏÍø research, and I’m delighted to see our formation rate sustained for another year.”
Addressing global challenges
51³Ô¹ÏÍø spinouts formed in the financial year ending July 2026 are addressing pressing challenges faced around the world, in alignment with 51³Ô¹ÏÍø’s Science for Humanity strategy.
Key sectors for the past year include applied artificial intelligence and human health, with frequent crossover between the two. AI healthcare companies formed include:
- , a brain health company developing ultrasound technology to enable accessible and universal brain imaging through the skull.
- , which is developing regulated clinical software to predict and prevent avoidable harm to patients in hospital.
- , which specialises in artificial intelligence analysis of electrocardiograms (ECG) to predict and diagnose cardiovascular and other health conditions before symptoms appear.
51³Ô¹ÏÍø Technology Experts Service
Many of the technologies that form the basis of 51³Ô¹ÏÍø spinouts start life in research labs. Expertise from industry professionals and past founders is essential in bringing these nascent ideas to market. 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Technology Experts Service (ITES) brings together entrepreneurs, former C-suite executives and other experts to play a pivotal role in supporting 51³Ô¹ÏÍø academics as they develop new technologies into practical solutions.

51³Ô¹ÏÍø holds an annual event welcoming ITES members and spinout founders to meet and celebrate their joint achievements. This year’s event saw a series of short pitches from recent spinouts, followed by a panel discussion led by ITES member Ashley Stephenson focused on key lessons for founders developing AI-focused companies from academia.
