Professor Ed Tate wins RSC Interdisciplinary Prize

by Edward Bartlett

We are delighted to share that Professor Ed Tate has been awarded the 2026 Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Interdisciplinary Prize, recognising his group’s contributions to chemical biology and translational science

acknowledges the development and application of chemical tools to study protein post-translational modifications, an area central to the Tate group’s research. As highlighted by the RSC, the award recognises “chemical biology approaches to reveal unique insights in protein post-translational modification, and for delivering chemical probes and first-in-class therapeutic strategies.”

Over the past decade, the group has pioneered technologies to interrogate protein lipidation, enabling these modifications to be studied across the proteome in living systems. These advances have helped establish lipidation as a key regulatory layer in cell signalling and a promising target space for therapeutic intervention in areas such as cancer, infection, and inflammation.

The award also reflects the translational impact of the group’s work. Discoveries made in the lab have contributed to the development of new platforms for drug discovery, including approaches now being advanced through spin-out companies focused on first-in-class therapeutics targeting lipidation-dependent pathways.

This recognition from the RSC highlights the importance of integrating chemistry, biology and medicine to tackle complex problems in cell biology and human disease. It is a testament to the creativity and collaborative efforts of current and former members of the Tate group.

We thank all collaborators and colleagues who have contributed to this work, and look forward to continuing to explore new chemical biology strategies to understand and modulate protein function in cells.
