Dr Emma Cavan held an 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Research Fellowship from 2020–2024, which included two career breaks for maternity leave, and is now Associate Professor in the Department of Life Sciences at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø.

Emma applied for the Fellowship three years after completing her PhD in biological oceanography, where she studied how microbes and zooplankton contribute to open-ocean organic carbon sink.

“The fellowship gave me time to carve out a niche in my field, whilst also understanding what I needed to do to get a permanent academic position.”

During the fellowship, Emma focused on developing modelling tools to understand how changes in ocean nutrient supply affect marine ecosystems and fisheries.

“Having that time to work out my research specialism and plan my next steps was invaluable. The stability of the fellowship – even being able to get a mortgage thanks to the fellowship income – made a huge difference.”

After completing the fellowship, Emma joined 51³Ô¹ÏÍø’s Silwood Park campus as a Senior Lecturer and has since become an Associate Professor.

“I think that what makes a good candidate is ambition. The fellowship gives you the opportunity to define your research direction and show that you can lead an independent programme.”
