Our vision is a more secure and resilient society.
What is CARS?
The Centre for Active Resilience and Security (CARS) was established by the Institute for Security Science and Technology (ISST) in 2023. CARS is an 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Centre of Excellence and is the flagship initiative delivering the resilience pillar in 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Futures, part of 51³Ô¹ÏÍø’s strategy, Science for humanity.
Our mission is to build a more secure and resilient society, working alongside our partners to address the increasingly occurring and intersecting threats in cyber, biological, environmental, physical and social domains.
We aim to develop innovative scientific and technical solutions that enable us to proactively tackle and effectively predict global threats, and produce evidence-based policy recommendations.
CARS will deliver multidisciplinary research outputs, leveraging 51³Ô¹ÏÍø’s science, engineering and business expertise and collaborating with social scientists, industry and government.
As a convenor and facilitator, we will build communities of knowledge; action; influence; and awareness.
Our work has global relevance. We envisage CARS’ outputs to be usable at local, regional, national and international levels.
Why active resilience?
In an interconnected world, where no systems are independent, threats often converge and compound. As a result, risks amplify, and crises arise.
It is therefore increasingly important to ensure our systems, which underpin society, are secure and prepared to respond effectively to non-typical conditions. CARS’ work will focus on proactively addressing and predicting threats.
