An Earth that supports prosperous, healthy people and flourishing nature
The Challenge
As the global population increases, and we place greater demands on land and the natural world, it is timely to consider what nature needs and how to safeguard and conserve those aspects effectively, whilst also providing for people, as part of the global ecosystem.
Mission Development
During our mission development we will seek, design, test and demonstrate realisable routes to a clean and healthy future.
The work emerging during development will demonstrate how we can relieve the pressure on our natural world, whilst optimising the production of energy, food, materials and vital services for and from nature.
We are building a body of work to provide irrefutable evidence that our land and oceans can sustain both people and nature.
We foresee there to be many projects emerging out of each mission. The first area of focus for the Nurturing mission is Sustainable Agriculture.
Agritech-Imaginarium
Sustainable Agriculture: Global food systems are under mounting pressure.
The world’s population is projected to peak at approximately 10.3 billion within the next 60 years, demanding radical shifts in how we produce, distribute, and consume food. Our ambition is to develop a research space where scientific ideas, technologies and economic models can be explored against real-world constraints.
Past and Future Activities
The first mission development meeting was held on 8 December 2025 with the focus being on Sustainable Agriculture. Those who attended were 51³Ô¹ÏÍø researchers from across faculties and departments. Some have worked in this field, and others brought expertise from other areas, which they applied to find solutions.
The purpose was to discuss the topic's key challenges, which have the most tangible objective and destinations, how convergence can be applied, and what are the key drivers to unlocking sustainable impact.
Themes that were discussed included: Predicting & Mitigating Environmental Risks, Optimising Agriculture in Future Landscapes, Harnessing Microbial Solutions, and Next-Generation Integrated Pest Management.
Going Forward
- Planned workshops to develop this missions and co-create projects within it. We welcome participation from across college, other institutions and industry to give their input and get involved.
- We are developing a 'theory of change' route towards impact for the Agritech-Imaginarium project under this mission.
- We are actively building a community around our missions. The kinds of stakeholders we are looking for to engage with us are researchers, industry experts, community members, co-creators, co-founders and pragmatic visionaries.
