Addressing residual emissions at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø
51³Ô¹ÏÍø is committed to tackling its indirect emissions, particularly those from travel and purchasing, which are complicated and without technological solutions that can support their full reduction to net zero.
We expect to have significant residual carbon emissions despite our best efforts to be as sustainable as possible. We are committed to exploring potential mechanisms for addressing these residual emissions, focusing on travel emissions in the first instance.
The Sustainability Hub is launching a series of pilot projects, to explore opportunities to minimise and manage air travel emissions, as it is the decisions of our departments, staff and students that influence our emissions level in this category.
The Sustainability Hub is taking a collaborative, exploratory, and evidence-based approach to developing our position on residual emissions management. It is through work with our diverse community and knowledge experts that we aim to develop an approach that is suitable, effective and may be considered in managing our collective residual emissions.
Developing an approach to residual emissions
As outlined in our stategy, we have plans to:
- experiment with practical approaches to carbon removals and carbon pricing, through pilot projects and schemes to test and learn from approaches
- explore what is an appropriate, in principle, approach for 51³Ô¹ÏÍø through wide engagement with the community
Pilot projects are exploring a variety of mechanisms such as carbon budgets, insetting, offsetting and carbon pricing. This area of work is supported by an expert Residual Emissions and Carbon Pricing Working Group.
