This practical workshop provides an introduction to Canvas, 51³Ô¹ÏÍø’s Learning Management System (LMS). It is aimed at academic and professional services staff who are responsible for creating content and managing courses in Canvas.

  • Navigate the Canvas environment and access support resources
  • Design, organise and customise courses
  • Create, add and manage a range of learning materials
  • Manage user course enrolments and groups membership
  • Review and publish course content.

Canvas Assessments

This practical session is designed for academic and professional services staff responsible for creating, managing, and grading assessments in Canvas.

Learning Outcomes

  • Distinguish between different assessment types in Canvas and select appropriate tools for their delivery, including Assignments, Quizzes, and external tools (LTIs).
  • Configure and organise assessments using 51³Ô¹ÏÍø naming conventions, Assignment Groups, weightings, and grading rules.
  • Manage assessment settings, deadlines, extensions, and differentiated due dates to support a range of assessment requirements.
  • Use the Gradebook, SpeedGrader, and related feedback and grade posting tools to manage and evaluate student submissions.
  • Review assessments from the student perspective and identify when more complex assessment scenarios require additional support.

Canvas Drop-in Support Sessions

These short, one-to-one appointments provide personalised guidance on any aspect of Canvas. Staff can submit their query when booking to help ensure the session is focused on their needs.

Learning Outcomes

  • Receive tailored support for a specific Canvas query or challenge
  • Resolve issues relating to course content, assessments, Gradebook, or enrolments
  • Develop confidence in using Canvas features and workflows
  • Identify relevant resources, training, and support services for further assistance

  • Up to 16 bookable sessions available each Wednesday afternoon

Digital Accessibility in Teaching and Learning

This workshop introduces the principles of digital accessibility and explores practical approaches to creating more inclusive teaching and learning experiences for all students.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the key principles of digital accessibility in teaching and learning
  • Recognise how to support students and colleagues with digital accessibility needs
  • Use Anthology Ally to review and improve the accessibility of course content
  • Explore ICT-supported accessibility tools and resources
  • Identify accessibility requirements, statements, and good practice for inclusive course design and delivery

This workshop introduces FeedbackFruits, a peer assessment and collaboration tool that supports group, peer-to-peer, and self-assessment activities within Canvas.

  • Develop rubrics and rating scales to support assessment and feedback
  • Monitor and review peer feedback and student participation
  • Track student progress throughout assessment activities

Panopto & AV Equipment

This hands-on workshop introduces Panopto and the AV equipment available in 51³Ô¹ÏÍø teaching spaces, helping staff create, edit, and share recordings for teaching and learning.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the key features and uses of Panopto for teaching and learning
  • Create and manage recordings using the Panopto recorder
  • Edit and organise recordings within Panopto
  • Manage folders and sharing options for recorded content
  • Gain practical experience of AV equipment available in 51³Ô¹ÏÍø teaching spaces
