GOLDFINCH (Fiscal INCentives for Health through UPF reduction) is a research project led by 51³Ô¹ÏÍø that aims to understand how fiscal policies can encourage healthier diets and reduce the consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs). UPFs have been linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers, and are often cheaper and more widely available than less processed alternatives. Building on previous work undertaken through the FINCH project, GOLDFINCH seeks to generate new evidence on how food taxes and pricing policies could support healthier food choices.
The project combines analyses of food purchasing patterns with modelling of the potential health impacts of dietary change. By examining how consumers and the food system may respond to different fiscal measures, GOLDFINCH will provide robust evidence to inform future food policy. The ultimate aim is to support the development of fair and effective policies that improve population health and reduce health inequalities.
