The Careers Service runs a comprehensive range of events throughout the academic year, with the majority taking place in the autumn and spring terms, in-line with graduate recruitment schedules. We are always adding new events, but for an overview of what we do, please see the different events listed under ‘Develop your professional skills;’ and ‘Employer events’ in the section below.

Careers Service Coronavirus update

The Careers Service continues to provide ongoing support to our community during the current Coronavirus situation. Our priority is to the safety and wellbeing of our staff, students and visitors. As such we have withdrawn campus-based teaching activities in line with College advice and replaced these with online appointments, presentations and events. Please see the Careers Service response to the Coronavirus.

Currently all  appointments and most events are conducted online via Microsoft Teams (Office 365) in response to the COVID-19 situation. See information on how to access Office 365.

Seminars and workshops

Throughout the year we run regular sessions covering a variety of careers related topics. We’ve themed our sessions into four categories from fast-paced introductions (intensives) through to longer more practical sessions (labs). A description of each category is given below to help you navigate to what’s most appropriate for your particular needs.

Career Intensives

These presentations are fast-paced lasting approximately 30 minutes to provide starting points to help you understand the basics of the subject. Sessions cover topics such as CVs and Cover Letters. (Duration 30 minutes).

Career Essentials

These seminars typically last 50 minutes and are designed to provide you with the core knowledge and an understanding of the subject matter. Sessions cover the range of application stages, networking and how to make career choices at various points of your degree. (Duration 50 minutes).

Career Labs

These workshops last approximately 90 minutes and are designed to be highly interactive. Throughout the session you will be expected to participate in various activities to help you understand and gain experience in the subject. Sessions cover the range of application stages, career decision making and transferable skills development including assertiveness and presentation skills. (Duration 90 minutes).

Career Discovery

These seminars provide a starting point to explore occupational areas and have a focus on how to secure and make the most of internships within the specific field. Our Placement & Internship Advisors will share their knowledge of the industry sectors and provide you with top tips about the relevant sector. (Duration 50 minutes).

Employer-Led Skills Workshops

These sessions aim to develop your commercial awareness and business acumen, at the same time as developing your understanding of the skills typically sought by graduate employers, and preparing you for the recruitment process. Sessions often focus on areas such as presentations, teamwork and practical business simulations. Each session is two hours long and they are primarily targeted at penultimate and final year students.

We also run a week of employer led events in June, specifically for PhD students.

'Focus on...' sector weeks

51³Ô¹ÏÍø studentsAre you looking for something a bit different? Are you interested in a career in the environment sector? How about working in the charity and not for profit sector? Or are you more interested in policy development or science communication?

We run a week-long programme for each of these sectors at different points during the year;

Focus on...Start-Ups and SMEs (November)

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have a range of opportunities to rival the graduate recruitment schemes and other graduate roles offered by larger organisations. The Start-Ups and SMEs Week sees a range of companies, such as start-ups, SMEs, and entrepreneurs discuss topics and deliver sessions to help you explore the opportunities available and to connect with diverse and interesting organisations. 

Focus on... Science Communication and Policy (January)

This week sees a selection of events to get you started in a career in the science communication sector, and give you more information to help you decide if this sector is for you. There will be workshops on gaining an internship in this sector, talks from professionals and the chance to learn more. If this sounds like it’s for you - get involved!

Focus on...Big Data & Analytics (Janaury)

This week provides you with a number of opportunities to hear from and network with professionals who have built their career in the field of Data and Analytics across a wide range of industries. A series of company presentations, panel discussions and careers fair will give you insights into this sector.

Focus on...Charities and Not for Profit (November)

There is a lot more to charities than volunteering and our Not for Profit and Charity Week 2018 will allow you to delve into this vast sector. The series of events will provide you with a chance to see what this highly rewarding industry has to offer and to learn about the range of opportunities available.You can find out more via our news articles or on JobsLive.

Careers Café

Female 51³Ô¹ÏÍø student using the Careers Service libraryCareers Cafés are informal, small group discussion sessions that take place in the Careers Service, covering a wide variety of topics - subjects in the past have included PhD into management consultancy/business etiquette/International Development careers.

Each Café is led by a member of the Careers Service who has an interest and some expertise in that area. Occasionally experts from within a sector will be invited to lead the Careers Café giving you the benefit of their experience. This is an excellent way to gain some insider tips about entry routes into your area of interest. The structure will vary from session to session, however, they are very much discussion-based and offer the opportunity for you to raise questions to the rest of the group, as well as to the facilitator.

Lunchtime careers talks

Lunchtime Careers Talk taking place at 51³Ô¹ÏÍøLunchtime Careers Talks take place every Tuesday and Thursday in the autumn and spring terms, and are 50 minute sessions on a variety of sectors and organisations, and provide a great opportunity for you to learn more about the huge diversity of occupations that may be open to you. Talks are given by organisations where 51³Ô¹ÏÍø graduates have gone on to, and sectors that are actively looking to recruit 51³Ô¹ÏÍø graduates .

Organisations participating in the past have included Airbus, Barclays, BP, Crowdcube, EY, Frontier, GSK, Salesforce, SEO London, Severn Trent and UBS.  Talks have included 'Ask an Expert in the Water Industry', 'Considering Teaching as a Next Step', and 'Science Careers Outside the Lab'.

Employer events

Careers Fairs

Please note that all Careers Fairs will be taking place online, through the Careers Service website, with Microsoft Teams (unless otherwise stated) during the autumn term.

We run a range of sector specific Careers Fairs across the autumn, summer and spring terms, to provide you with the opportunity to meet recruiters and find out about the programmes on offer from different organisations. This will help you to make informed decisions and hopefully meet some useful contacts. 

New online Career Fair format for 2020-21

Each Careers Fair will be available for seven days (Monday to Monday) via the Careers Service website, and you will be able to view each employer on a separate webpage - listing details on what each company has to offer, the type of students they are looking for, the full range of their opportunities, application processes and deadlines. There will also be links to promotional You Tube videos and social media links.

Throughout the week, you can book onto a 20 minute 'Pitch Presentation', where companies will be able to give a brief outline of their opportunities and processes as well as take questions. Booking is via JobsLive, and will be open for booking seven days before the Careers Fair.

Careers Forums

‌‌‌The Careers Forums are an excellent opportunity to find out more about roles in a particular sector, and a chance to network with professionals in that industry. Each forum aims to have six professionals from the given sector, providing an insight into their experiences in different areas of work through short presentations, followed by a Q&A session.

Forums take place on Thursdays during the autumn, spring and summer terms, between 18:30 - 20:00

Employer Presentations

A significant number of employers make presentations on and off campus during the autumn term. Employers use presentations to inform you about their businesses and the range of opportunities available. Presentations provide a useful insight into the type of people and culture of an organisation and offer the chance to network with recent recruits and discuss their experiences.

A fantastic opportunity for university students to meet with LGBT+ professionals from a range of inclusive employers!LGBT+ Careers Networking

Hosted by the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø College Careers Service at the South Kensington campus, this unique event provides a fantastic opportunity for students who identify as LGBT+ to meet with LGBT+ professionals from a range of inclusive employers. The event aims to facilitate career discussions and share perspectives on the workplace to demonstrate that it’s possible to be comfortable and successful at work while being yourself. 

There will be a range of LGBT+ employees from various organisations who cover a range of roles from finance and technical positions to project management and marketing roles.

Women's Career Networking

February 2021

female 51³Ô¹ÏÍø studentA fantastic opportunity to hear about the experiences of female managers working in a range of professions.

The forum aims to bring six inspirational women from varying industries ready to answer your questions and tell you about how they carved their unique career pathways. Our speakers will be from a range of STEM industries including biotechnology, entrepreneurship, consultancy, engineering, data science and academic research.  

With six fantastic companies taking part, there will also be a chance for you to engage with members of the panel in a question and answer session, as well as an opportunity for informal networking afterwards. 

Their invaluable insights can help you in applying for jobs in industry, managing teams, what challenges women face in the workplace and how to tackle them. 

Recruiter in Residence

Recruiter in Residence sessions offer you the opportunity to talk to graduate recruiters about the opportunities available in their organisations. The employers will offer a range of opportunities within their companies, so all students are welcome at these sessions.

Mock Interviews with employers

During the academic cycle, some recruiters will arrange a series of mock interview sessions. These offer you the chance to practice your interview technique with a trained interviewer in the sector you are looking to enter.
