The Chaplaincy Garden
Growing Community, Wellbeing & Innovation at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø
Once an overlooked lawn and abandoned forest, the Chaplaincy Garden is undergoing an inspiring transformation into a dynamic green hub where nature, learning and community thrive together. This student-driven initiative, supported by 51³Ô¹ÏÍø’s Chaplaincy, the President's Community Fund and Student Shapers, has already secured over £60,000 to revitalise the space and empower students to take an active role in shaping its future.
What was previously a maintenance burden is being reimagined as a valuable asset that promotes biodiversity, supports carbon capture and enhances wellbeing. The addition of two modern greenhouses, a woodwork shed and a restored forest meditation area is turning the site into a multifunctional space that blends environmental stewardship with learning, research and innovation opportunities.
Working with the Students’ Union, students across 51³Ô¹ÏÍø and partners such as the RHS and the V&A, the garden is evolving into both a living classroom and a sanctuary for wellbeing. Students are not only invited to volunteer but also to contribute as paid team members, gaining hands-on experience while integrating the garden into teaching, research and creative initiatives.
Weekly Action Days (Wednesdays and Fridays, 1–4 pm) open the gates to the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø community, offering chances to engage in gardening, wellbeing activities and collaborative projects that strengthen connections across campus.
The Chaplaincy Garden is more than a green space - it is a bold step towards reimagining the campus as a place where biodiversity flourishes, wellbeing and belonging is nurtured and innovation grows from the ground up.
