‘Mechanisms of NET stability and degradation in infection’

Neutrophils are essential immune phagocytes that control a variety of microbial pathogens, but are also implicated in immune pathology and tissue destruction. ÌýVeni is interested in understanding how neutrophil responses are properly regulated to control pathogens while minimizing immune pathology. ÌýHe has previously described mechanisms that regulate the release of chromatin structures called neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in response to fungal pathogens and their role in immune protection and pathology. ÌýDuring his visit, Veni will discuss unpublished work that explores how NETs are properly stabilized and subsequently degraded to balance inflammatory programmes and minimize microbial dissemination and fungal asthma.
