Sculpting clay

Participants will create their own clay sculptures, exploring the material in its most natural and sustainable form. Unlike traditional ceramics, the sculptures will not be fired in a kiln. Instead, they will be left to air dry, allowing them to harden while remaining unfired and fully biodegradable.

Participants are welcome to take their creations home, but they will be encouraged to leave them scattered throughout the Secret Garden as part of a temporary outdoor installation. The sculptures may survive a few summer showers, but over time they will gradually dissolve through the seasons, eventually returning to the earth from which they came. In this way, the work embraces impermanence, celebrating natural cycles of creation, transformation, and decay. The only lasting record of the installation will be photographs. By avoiding kiln firing and using locally sourced materials, the workshop is extremely low-impact, highly carbon-conscious, and produces virtually no waste.
