Creating a collaborative research environment, enabling the next scientific breakthrough

Life-changing discoveries are born where people, ideas and technology meet. 51³Ô¹ÏÍø is investing in these meeting points, creating new spaces grounded in cutting-edge digital infrastructure.

Philanthropy will transform the scale of 51³Ô¹ÏÍø’s research output – bringing together researchers and scientists across disciplines, and connecting them with businesses, society and policymakers to translate scientific innovation into real-world application. With your support, we can accelerate the impact of new ideas and discoveries and create a safer, smarter and more sustainable future.

Transformative discoveries start at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø

Philanthropy at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø gives brilliant minds the interdisciplinary spaces and platforms needed to foster true collaboration.

The Sir Michael Uren Biomedical Engineering Hub is one of these spaces - bringing together over 500 51³Ô¹ÏÍø researchers, engineers and clinicians to develop new and affordable medical technologies. Made possible by a landmark donation of £40 million from the late 51³Ô¹ÏÍø alumnus Michael Uren OBE and his Foundation, the Hub is home to many interdisciplinary teams, including the the MSk Lab, focused on musculoskeletal health and degeneration.

The team of surgeons, physiotherapists, scientists and engineers at the MSk Lab is behind the new H1 implant which has opened up less invasive hip resurfacing surgery to women. Designed using ceramic rather than metal to coat the two faces of the hip joint, the new H1 implant can be shaped to better fit women’s hip shapes.

As the first hip resurfacing device to receive the CE mark, the H1 implant can now be sold to clinics throughout Europe and other countries that recognise the CE mark, making life-changing treatment widely available.

The development of the H1 implant shows what can be achieved when engineers, scientists, clinicians and industry work together on a shared goal. It’s a wonderful and concrete example of bench to bedside translational research coming from the Sir Michael Uren Hub.
