Tackling antimicrobial resistance

When Sir Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin in 1928 – one of the most important scientific breakthroughs of the twentieth century – he also cautioned that bacteria would eventually evolve resistance to antibiotics. That warning has now become a reality. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) threatens our ability to treat common infections, reversing decades of medical progress and making even routine surgical procedures potentially life-threatening.

An estimated 39 million lives could be lost to antimicrobial resistance over the next 25 years. The Fleming Initiative is responding to this challenge through a people-centred, convergence science approach – bringing together researchers, clinicians, policymakers and communities in a coordinated, global effort to reduce the burden of AMR.

Unlocking public health impact

The Fleming Initiative – a global programme led by 51³Ô¹ÏÍø and 51³Ô¹ÏÍø College Healthcare NHS Trust – is developing the next generation technologies and data-driven solutions that can tackle antimicrobial resistance, support informed policymaking and improve public engagement on AMR.

The Fleming Centre, due to open in 2028, will be the global headquarters of the Fleming initiative. This convening hub will be established at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London – the site of Fleming’s discovery of penicillin, and an ideal location to engage a diverse range of experts and audiences.

Philanthropic support will bring this ambitious vision to life, creating an innovative ecosystem where powerful new ideas emerge and thrive, accelerating the translation of discoveries into policies that can be easily adopted by populations worldwide. With your support, we can shape a future where antibiotics continue to keep us safe.

Join us in the fight against antimicrobial resistance

Your support for the Fleming Centre helps to further solutions to the antimicrobial resistance crisis. If you wish to learn more about the development plans for the Fleming Centre, or find out how your gift can make the most impact, please get in touch with:
