The is a national initiative launched in 2017, the objective of which is to address the need for greater coordination and collective action across the sector to improve the status and profile of technicians and to ensure the sustainability of the technical workforce in academia. The themes of the Technician Commitment are:
Visibility – ensuring technicians within the institution are identifiable and that their contribution is visible within and beyond the institution.
Recognition – supporting technicians to gain recognition through professional registration and award or accreditation schemes.
Career Development – enabling career progression opportunities through the provision of clear, documented career pathways.
Sustainability – ensuring the future sustainability of technical skills across the organisation and that technical expertise is fully utilised.
Technician Commitment signatories undertake a three-year cycle of action planning, implementation and impact reporting.
