Automated formative and summative feedback: Mech Eng

These assessments focus on automated feedback provided for mathematical, short-answer questions in undergraduate problem sets. Feedback is both formative and summative. Students complete weekly self-study exercises with accompanied feedback throughout the autumn and spring terms, including 17 formative homework sheets. Summative ‘progress tests’ worth 5% of the module provide low-stakes assessment at the end of the first term.

Online Maths low stake quizzes

This flexible, learning-focused quiz-based mathematics assessment uses online maths-aware software, WeBWork, to support student learning. The formative quizzes help students learn maths concepts through flexibility in timing, unlimited attempts, and opportunities to work collaboratively. Delivered 10 times throughout the academic year, each quiz covers approximately 10 questions linked to module topics.

Electronic mid-term exams

Mid-term exams are low-stake assessments with a formative function, delivered around six weeks into the term to check students’ progress and offer appropriate support for future learning. The exams consist of 1 to 15 questions and are delivered and marked electronically via Wiseflow software.
